Personal Narrative Summary: A Journey To Become A Baby

I think my greatest and overwhelming fear that tormented me throughout my pregnancy has become a reality. It was 9:00 on a Tuesday morning, when I experienced my first labor pain. Without hesitation, I immediately reached for my cell phone to contact my husband, but it went straight to voicemail. I had no means to reach him, because Shaw Air Force Base was having a war readiness exercise. My mind had to quickly accept the fact that my bundle of joy was coming eight days early, according to the estimated due date. This narrative will take the reader on a wonderful, yet frightful journey through pre-labor, active labor and the delivery of my son. Finally, my contractions were three minutes apart. I hated to wake my husband up again, but I knew it was time to go. I remember vividly talking to my friend Angela as I watched my husband trying to put the string through his gray jogging pants. I told Angela that I was trying not to get angry with my husband. Why didn’t he grab another pain under the extreme circumstances? We made it safely back to Tuomey Hospital. A wonderful attendant graciously brought me a wheelchair because he noticed I was struggling to walk while having severe contractions. My husband was abnormally calm throughout the entire ordeal. Unfortunately, I was six centimeters dilated before the epidural was administered. Prior to the epidural, it felt like someone was beating my lower lumbar area like it was a bass drum. Nevertheless, active labor for me was only about two hours. The doctor entered the room with the announcement that it was time to break my water. Thus he tried but to his surprise it had already occurred. Angrily he questioned the nurses about the events that had transpired. Nervously the nurses inquired of me when did I notice that my water was broke; I told them at 3:30 a.m., but I was sent back home. During labor, my husband tried to instruct me on how to breathe correctly, and I told him to get out my face because I know how to breathe. At 8:27 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, I delivered a healthy 7lbs 10oz baby boy. In conclusion, giving birth to a child is truly the closest a woman will get to death without dying. Although I started having contractions without my husband, my recurrent nightmare about going in labor alone did not become a reality. I was so grateful that we attended birthing classes, because we were aware of what transpires throughout the process. Thankfully I didn’t experience any Braxton Hicks.
