When talking to each other, her mom would talk to her in Spanish and she would respond in English, which in turn made her mother angry because she was not using her traditional cultural language. Although having a traditional language is nice, being able to speak multiple languages can be very beneficial to young adults. In the Hispanic culture today, it has become even more common for young adults to use spanglish. Through the process of acquiring knowledge in this course, I have learned countless aspects about my own self. Amidst the very challenges I faced, the act of communication, management, and leadership, are among them. Being bilingual, my communication skills are on par yet at times hinder me from articulating my intention precisely as I have meant them. With every socialization I have made, I have striven to do better and to be better. I have learned that although you may consider yourself “fluent” in a foreign language, there are phrases or intonations to which come across as something entirely different from what you intended to say causing the message to be lost between the barrier of the two communicators.
Amy Tan has provided her experience about growing up with different types of English language. She told a story about her encounter with the different types of English she uses with her husband and her mother and how these languages are apart of her life. I never would’ve thought that written language differed from spoken language, until Tan told her story. Her experiences were quite emotional, because she had to pretend to be her mother on the telephone. The communicators on the other end of the line did not understand Tan’s mother or take her very seriously, which I found to be uncivil. It’s important for people to learn to be patient with those who need time to speak and those who have trouble with a secondary language.

I think that it is related to the multiple systems I need to be aware of when I am speaking in English which I don’t need to play much attention to when I speak in Spanish. I had always been a shy kid. I was always fearful of judgement and now my voice gave it away. I began to rely heavily on my parents for means of communication when the situation involved me having to speak in Spanish. I could not bear to see the look of confusion on people 's faces when I spoke Spanish, so I turned to my parents who were both fluent in Spanish. I was frustrated and fed up. It was one thing to occasionally speak Spanish but without it you couldn’t survive in Miami. I couldn’t wrap my head around such logic. Since September 16, 1999 my parents instilled in me the importance of Spanish becoming my first language. Also, while traveling to Washington, an experience at a restaurant made me look crass in front of people, encouraging me to gain a higher level of communication skills in English. I finally comprehend why my parents encouraged me to be bilingual as we are given opportunities like getting a Seal of Biliteracy. Even though I am very good with my Spanish, I also face challenges. For example, it's difficult making pauses as I talk, however I am able speak with great diction and my fluidity extremely well.
