Personal Narrative: My Failure In Middle School

Whether it’s a math test, the expectations of your parents, or even personal goals, we experience failure frequently throughout or lives. Whether or not we learn from our mistakes is what makes all the difference. One of my biggest failures came during my 8th-grade year of middle school. All throughout middle school my focus was on baseball, and leading into 7th grade I wasn’t shocked that I was put on the JV team. However, my goal was to become a varsity baseball player by the beginning of my 8th-grade season. Having practiced all year long the day had finally come for our coaches to give out the varsity jerseys. The list of names was read off while my pride, as well as my excitement, began to shrink. My name was never called, but I remember one thing my coach told me “you’re not on varsity right now, but once you get a little taller, you’ll get your chance. Quitting became a very real possibility for me, especially having put so much work into something that didn’t work out. After deciding not to quit, I was determined to earn a spot on the JV high school team, and the next season was coming right around the corner. Realizing that my efforts last year weren’t good enough, and I needed to work even harder if I wanted a spot on the JV team. Throughout the summer and fall, we practiced a lot, going straight from the summer team, to offseason. Once the season was approaching I knew that I deserved a spot, but I still had that doubt lingering in my mind.
