Personal Narrative: My Experience At Sinking Springs Elementary School

“Intermediate school” is a funny term. It makes grades 4-6 sound like they serve only to mediate between the lower elementary grades and middle school. However, many of my best memories and experiences that have shaped me as a person happened at Sinking Springs Elementary School, my intermediate school. My creative efforts at Sinking Springs extended beyond what I had done at Hayshire in the talent shows. The most notable example is Ms. Bohn’s 5th grade classroom. In her room my writing and performing skills were allowed to flourish more than any other classroom had before. Ms. Bohn allowed my friend Allison and I to write and perform our own plays as part of our education. Being allowed this freedom to grow as a writer and performer has had a huge impact on my life. As an AP English student, I have a lot to thank Ms. Bohn and Sinking Springs for. I can recall moments from many teachers in which I was learning something in a way other than just reading from a textbook. From using beads in a cup to simulate the feudal economic system to creating my own fictional machine using the concepts of levers and pulleys, learning took on a whole new meaning at Sinking Springs. An especially fond memory of mine is my trip to JA Biztown in 6th grade, which I will always remember as my favorite day of my public education. Being able to experience a simplified version of adult life for a day helped me figure out that I want to major in business in college. I also learned some basic financial skills such as balancing a checkbook and paying bills.
