My academic college journey began first in Pembroke Pines, Florida at Broward College, now I am a Junior at Florida State University. My major is Business Management and Marketing with a minor in child development and I am the type of student that is not afraid to ask questions about the content of the material. The degree you earn is both a ticket to personal and professional fulfillment and a badge representing hard work and dedication. The world is built by people who have trusted to their own unshaken will in hope and in despair. Those are the heroes, the idealists who amidst the gulf of solitude more isolating than that, which surrounds a dying man, could think great about their future. Their lives foment many spirited acolytes for whom destiny is no matter, a chance, but a matter of choice and it is nothing to be waited for, but a thing to be achieved. In this piece Edmundson uses ethos, logos, and pathos to convince parents to encourage their students to follow their dreams, as well as to convince students to discover themselves during their college career. He effectively achieves his purpose through his use of credible sources (ethos), appeals to morals and values (logos), and personal experiences (pathos).

While in college, I attend to do my absolute best by making the highest marks on all my tests and later the bar exam. I strive to establish my own law practice that will continue to thrive long after my own retirement. I strive to have a well-nourished family that is both physically healthy and mentally prosperous. Nevertheless the entity I would do that will be my most important trademark and not be forgotten will be my compassion for my fellow man. I consider myself to be a person who values friendship over monetary wealth, and it’s the kind acts, the bonds and friendships you form, the time you take out of your own life to volunteer and give back that is the only way to be truly remembered long after you depart. The rewards, achievements, and monuments may last longer, but the memories you leave behind with the people you love are far more important. After graduating from high school many graduated seniors face the difficult challenge of applying to a university or community college to attend to in the fall. With applying to college, students compare their likes and dislikes with each school, determine which school environment suits them best, and where can they receive the best possible education for their potential major. Searching for a school to attend is an important part of a student’s life and applying to one should be performed very carefully. Before students are admitted to a school, Universities must determine whether a student is applicable during an admission process. Admission is a crucial step to being accepted into an elite college or major university. There are a few ways which the admissions process can take place, and the legacy admission is one to name out of the few. Many controversial issues have arisen through out the past few years, stating that this type of selection is not fair to other students who do not qualify under the legacy status. It is unethical to choose a student for superior reasons, because it is not fair to other students who are not of superior status, but deserve to attend a school.
Many of family members, such as my mother, aunts, uncles, brothers, and grandparents, attended four-year institutions. In terms of Yasso’s idea of Community Cultural Wealth, a college culture was “nurtured among my family,” thus providing me with Familial capital (Yasso, 2005, p. 79). If I ever aspired to become a sufficient member of society and possess some sort of monetary support, my Familial capital made it clear that in order to do so, I needed to attain a college education. My transition to college was successful, but it was nonetheless one of the most stressful times in my life. Unlike many of my peers at Saint Louis University, my rural high school experience did not truly prepare me for the academic rigors of college. Despite extensive preparation, I performed rather poorly on the first round of exams. While I didn’t fail any particular exam, my performance was seriously lacking. I knew that getting C’s on exams would not serve me well in the pursuit of my dream of becoming a physician. The stereotypical version of the normal life of a teenager proceeding to college would include high academic standards met throughout their high school career and outstanding outside testing scores resulting in automatic entry into the institution of their choice. Many of these individuals have the support of their accomplished family members in the form of financial support. There are those who have not had the luxuries of any easy upbringing but forced to decide between a life with a college degree or full-time employment. For myself I want to have it all and to achieve that I have taken on both.
During one of my rides for work at O'SNAP, I passed by a group of students gathered around in a circle on the sidewalk. After dropping off my party, I drove by them to ask if they needed a ride. They accepted, but one of the students was visibly ill. I asked if they needed assistance to get back to their dorm, but they insisted they were fine. Due to the policy of NDSP, student drivers aren't allowed to bring back students who are ill due to insurance policies. The student insisted they were fine, but was unable to maintain balance and felt light headed. There was an unopened water bottle in the vehicle I was operating and offered it to the student. The other students with the student helped me lower the student to sit on the edge of the curb.
My first year in college has been a rewarding experience. As I look back on my Why College, Why Now essay, I realize that I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about myself. I am proud that I accomplished my goals I made in my first year of college and I exceeded my expectations. I still have the same goal for the future, but I added more goals for the future. I am attending Wilmington University because I want to make my future brighter. Attending college and earning a degree in communication media will help me obtain an exciting job as a professional journalist.
At first, it wasn’t too hard, as the work load was rather miniscule for all of my classes. Around midterms the amount of schoolwork exceeded the amount of time I had available and has stayed there since. There are 168 hours in any given week, 50 of which I am working, and 17 hours are class time. That leaves me with 101 hours. Around 56 hours are used to sleep as I attempt to get around 8 hours of sleep a night. Down to 45 hours to drive places, eat, and socialize I realized I need to manage my time better. Commencement is a critical juncture in our lives; it is a momentous occasion where we believe we are about to start anew. However, graduation is the bittersweet moment where the forces of past and future are simultaneously acting on us. Consequently, the past is not dead. Alfred, Lord Tennyson, suggests that our past experiences will be with us forever as he states, " [we] are a part of all that [we] have met; yet all experience is an arch where through gleams that untraveled world." That is why graduation, similar to other turning points in our lives, possesses two halves, which accentuate each other. We are looking forward, but the "arch" of experience beckons us to remember, value, and learn from our past experiences. Thus, I feel that in order to appreciate commencement fully, we must remember our own past, and in particular, the last four years:
