Personal Narrative: Hairspray

It was my third week of high school. Hairspray was announced as the fall musical, and I yearned to get involved. Simply planning to learn the audition song, I spent an afternoon at the musical workshop. However, a flyer on the call-board caught my attention and changed my life forever. The notice announced deadlines for crew manager applications and included position descriptions. The first position listed, stage manager, required someone diligent, organized, punctual, patient, respectful, and hard-working. Feeling the position fit me perfectly, I jumped at the opportunity to broaden my horizons in the theatre world. Since then, I have managed five additional productions. For me, stage management is more than a hobby. Stage management is my life. When working backstage, I’m part of something bigger than myself. I’m part of a team of unique, talented, passionate people who each hold a piece of the puzzle. Without the sound manager, costume designer, lighting operator, or props master, performances wouldn’t occur. In theatre and life, everyone needs a little help from their friends. No one can conquer the world alone. From stage management, I’ve learned the importance of remaining humble to maintain respect. Leaders find success by keeping the interests of their followers in mind and staying optimistic, approachable, and patient. Sometimes, people just need a supporter and caregiver. I delight in the moments I improve someone’s day by providing a Band-Aid, tissue, safety pin, water bottle, or even a cupcake. Theatre has taught me things will occasionally go wrong. Whether a door frame splits, a prop shatters, a costume rips, or an actor catches the flu, the show must and will go on. Stage managers work diligently to solve any problem thrown at them and never give up. They understand the value of flexibility and composure and set the tone of a production. Stage management allows me to use my organization and leadership skills to create something beautiful for people to cherish. Theatre breaks boundaries and possesses the power to heal even the most damaged souls. I savor the relationships I build with directors, technicians, crew members, and actors and enjoy watching them succeed. The exhaustion from hours in rehearsals and run-throughs pales in comparison to the elation felt when the company takes their final bow to a standing ovation.
