Personal Essay: Why I Anticipate In A Wrestling Team

Wrestling does not seem to be a fun sport to participate in, so I sometimes get asked why I do it. I usually tell them it is because i’m the Michael Jordan of being bad at basketball, but that’s not the main reason. My sophomore year I joined the wrestling team to get tougher, and learn to balance different things by juggling work, school, and sports. Plus I was always a small kid with only average coordination, so sports were never really my forte. However, I was decent so I didn't want to give up athletics just yet. Anyways, I did well that season and since I never excelled at sports before, I fell in love with wrestling. Next year I competed with another kid for a spot on varsity, but lost. I was disappointed, but not disheartened. Determined to improve my skills, I joined a wrestling club the following offseason. After many months of training, I finally made varsity. I was feeling ready, willing, and able, so when I got knocked out of the first tournament of the season, I might not have shown it, but I was furious. I began doubting myself, I wondered if all that training had been for nothing, and if I let my coach down; he said he has a lot of hope for me this season. I immediately started remembering other failures from my past: getting cut from the eighth grade soccer team, dropping down a level in english, and other failures varying in severity. To me, being a good wrestler is what made up for those times I failed, so it hurt to lose. After the tournament I was with some friends when I realized that there was still the rest of the season to get through, and that I'm not as superb a wrestler I thought I was. I could either quit, focus on school, and avoid being defeated by more experienced kids. Or I could stay and finish what I started.
