The route along the Pony Express began at the Platte River, next Fort Bridger, then to the Great Salt Lakes, and finally to Sierra Nevada. The route was a total of one hundred-ninety four miles.- They switched horses every ten- fifteen miles.With one hundred- ninety stations the Pony Express covered the rough terrain fastly.
Indian Horse is a novel by Richard Wagamese that beautifully explores the idea of family, and what it means to have people around you that make you feel at home. The reader is bombarded with an overwhelming sense of family and betrayal in the first few pages of the novel. As Richard Wagamese continues to write, one is able to see how safe Saul Indian Horse felt with his biological family, and he also shows how lost he felt without their love when he was taken to the Residential School. The school he was brought to was drained of all consensual love the moment it was open, and continued to fill the children with horrible feelings the entire time they were there. A thing you always have to train your horse with is to be patient, get a halter on them and tie them on a post, make sure the horse can get free if they pull, or have a quick release latch. I say this because if your horse is totally tied up to a wooden post that’s only stuck in the ground, no matter how far in, or how sturdy it is, if your horse gets spooked, it will, pull the post out of the ground because if he pulls, and it won’t release, they will pull and pull as hard as they can until they feel no pressure, then they will stop, and calm themselves down. When you tie a horse, don’t just leave them there, but do hands on things, brush them, talk to them, pet them, pick their front and back hooves, and get them used to people going behind them and touching their rump and playing with their tail, patting their rump, back, side, etc., you never know when someone will do that and they’re not used to it. The last thing I wanted to learn about was jumping. This skill would be hardest but it would be crucial if I wanted to be an adventurous rider. It was very hard at first, by which I mean I would get air but crash. When I got the hang of it it was awesome it felt so great to be flying, or at least that’s what it felt like. By the end of my tenth year on this planet I was totally ready for a bigger four wheeler. Actually a four wheeler that would be twice as big as my current one at the time. So, I got a Suzuki ltz four hundred, this four wheeler was incredible I loved it a bunch. The first time I rode it I was being typical adventurous me and rolled it. That hurt pretty bad and I didn’t really want to ride anymore that day but I realized that stuff happens and if I’m still alive I’m going to keep on trucking. So, I learned all of the previous skills that I had on my old bike except this time I was much faster and way better. I was able to drag race and beat fifty percent or more of people but most of the time I’d win more. Imagine riding a horse on white sandy beach with crystal blue waters, or a cowboy in the dusty deserts of the Wild West. Although riding a horse along a tropical island and cowboys do exist, horseback riding is recognized as a sport. Most do not realize but horsemanship can be added as a part of an exercise routine and have similar benefits of going to the gym. In addition, there are psychological gains of horse riding.

When riding a horse you don’t just sit there and do nothing, You work hard to control a 800-1000 pound animal. You have to push your horse and yourself to the greatest you can be. It is a lot of work, it is just like any other sport. You have to go ride your horse at least 4 times a week, you practice in the wind, rain, snow, when it’s hot out, and event when it is freezing cold.
Any good horseman should know that there are three very important steps to take into consideration when preparing to ride your horse. The following three steps; grooming, tacking up, and warming up, if done properly should lead to a trouble free enjoyable ride.

The Spanish vaqueros of the 1800's used the bosal to start their horses, and they took their time in doing so.

Training a young horse can be a difficult task, and often for beginning trainers a confusing task as well. Striking out on one’s own and deciding how to train a horse is a highly debated project. Many trainers choose to either follow the treaded path of traditional training methods or natural horsemanship techniques. As an animal science major, it is important for my career to decide how I will approach training, and stay strong to my decision. It is a choice to be carefully considered; which school of thought, natural horsemanship techniques, traditional training methods, or alternative training will I obey through my career?
I am jarred out of a relaxing sleep by a voice yelling my name in a loud whisper, and a light burning through my eyelids. Groggily, I open my eyes to see my father standing in the doorway to my messy room. He tells me that I need to get going, that it is 3:00 a.m., and I'm burning daylight. I find my clothes and get dressed. The whole time I wonder why I get up this early to visit the rugged outdoors. I want to go back to bed, but I know my dad will be back in to make sure I am getting ready, in a little bit. Instead, I put my boots and my wide-brimmed, black cowboy hat on, and walked out to catch the horses. The horses are all excited because it is dark and they are not that cooperative. My dad and I get them saddled and in the trailer, and go back into the house to get our lunch, water, and a cup of coffee. Now, we can head for the high country.
