Personality has a big and great responsibility; Representing an individual’s character and establish the individual’s mood. Clothes help in expressing one’s innermost thoughts, kindness, and feelings. Selection of the clothes according to the occasion, time or mood reflects the taste of a person and while the way of dressing oneself comes without planning and it can’t be realized by the person unless being asked, this does not necessarily mean that one has to wear what is common to all but to what relates to a person’s own thinking and perception. One’s mood can influence someone’s way of dressing greatly. While I was attending high school, there was a boy in my English class named Eric. He would always wear black or dark colored clothes. People at school would label him as “emo” or “depressed”. I had always minded my business in the class until one assignment where we had to share some things about our family. I learned that he was close to losing his home. He had shared that his parents often fought about financial problems. His mood was negative on how he perceived life so that was the reason he wore such dark colored clothing. His inner, private life was reflected onto his outer, body wear. Having the latest brands or wearing the most expensive clothes is all influenced by social media. I can say that I am very influenced in my style of clothing regarding social media. I follow this blogger named “Tia” and she inspires and influences my entire way of dressing. Tia lives in England and dresses vintage but retro. I am influenced by how “cool” she wears her clothing. I try to match her style in my own way. I have been since complimented on my style of dressing and this raises my confidence slowly. Clothing in the Victorian era was constantly changing. Three of the most common fabrics used, were cotton, flax, and silk. Women’s clothing was changing more often than men’s and different materials were used for each gender. Victorian clothing was different for each social class; to say nothing of, types of clothing and materials also differed by gender.
Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant and author, sheds light on the notion that if a person were to love their clothes, whether it be expensive or not, they would be able to sustain that pride with himself everyday: “If you fold your clothes in the formal spark of joy, you can actually make the joy last longer.” Albeit some may argue that personality has no correlation with the way a person dresses, the fact of the matter is that clothing choice can influence the way one acts on a specific day.

Under the current capitalism society and material culture, people tend to form their identities through consumption, this means more than to consume products which are needed to survive, consumption can also link to self-identity formation and expression. People are imperceptibly influenced by the mass media that self-identity can be shaped and formed through consuming specific products. Therefore it can be said, fashion is an important element of identity formation. Young people are commonly feared of being seen as outdated and seek for acceptance from the peers and the society. According to Erikson’s theory of personal social and personal development adolescences and young adults see peers as a critical influence, acceptance of peers can lead to security of identity and self-esteem. This essay is going to examine how young people shape or form their identities through the consumption of fashion. Youths tend to shape their identity through different styles or ways of dressing, differentiate themselves from others and express their feeling or identity through fashion.
Fashion is a form people use as a way for self expression. For me, fashion dictates how a person sense of style is; some may be bold and loud or simple and calm in which it also gives others an outlook on how their character may be. Although fashion is a way to express ones’ sense of style it does not tells us who the person is personally.
