The first time I held her in my arms was magical. That little ball of golden fluff that I got to call my own puppy was like a ray of sunshine, and I could not wait to start our life together. We named her Scout, and she was the most precious and perfect dog in the world. From her soft, luminescent golden fur to her playful, loving personality, Scout was a perfect fit for our family and was deeply loved. However, about a year and a half later, on a night just like any other, Scout curled up and fell asleep on my bed with me. When I woke up, I realized that Scout had an accident while she was sleeping and had urinated on the bed. I want to be able to do the dirty work, so to speak, so that a precious pet can have a chance at a long, healthy, and happy life with a family that loves him. I know that as a veterinarian I will not be able to save each and every animal in need, but if I could save just a few, my purpose would be realized. I would be honored to be able to learn more about the veterinary profession and what it is like to actually live and work as a veterinarian through this camp; it could give me insight and knowledge into the career that I’d love to gain as an aspiring veterinary student. Ever since I have been a little girl, I have dreamt of being a veterinarian, but Scout’s passing really cemented the aspiration. I realize that being a veterinarian is not easy, and vets have to perform extremely sad acts in the name of the quality of life of a pet. I also know that some of the surgeries and things of that nature are by no means pretty, and are oftentimes pretty gross! However, I am very interested in science and I’m not squeamish in the slightest. Once, i had to clean my pet rabbit’s abscess nightly, but I loved doing it because it helped her to continue to live happily and have a good quality of life. I hope that through this camp I can learn more about pursuing my dream career and healing the animals I love so
