Two famous stories, Persepolis and Antigone are the inspiration for women, who are unable to express their feelings or thoughts. Persepolis is written in 1980s. It is a story about the growth and development of a girl named Marjane Satrapi from her childhood to her early adult years during and after the Islamic Revolution. Antigone is written in 600 B.C. It is about a girl named Antigone who defies the law to give her brother a proper burial. These two ladies are juxtaposed as modern feminists, who broke their limitations to pursue freedom and free will. Marjane and Antigone are examples of modern feminists, but their reasons to fight are different. In Persepolis, Marjane’s mom is sexaully harrased. Marji shows her resistance to her government by accepting the Western Culture, listening to American music at home, and wearing jeans and jewelry regardless of what her teacher said. In Persepolis, it stated, “ I was fourteen and a rebel. Nothing scared me anymore”(Satrapi 143/). The word “rebel” is used for people, who committed crime against the government’s laws. This highlights Marji’s ignorance of laws. Despite what the people said, she will always stay true to herself, and she will not let anyone drown out her inner voice. Like Marji, Antigone also smashes her own chains. Even on brink of death, Antigone still express her mind to the king. In the book, it stated, “ And yet you dared defy the law….I dared. It was not God’s proclamation.”(Sophocles II. 56-58). The word “dared” demonstrates that Antigone is a protester, and she is not afraid to talk back to Creon. She believes that Creon or anyone is weak against the powerful gods regardless of their social status. Even though women seems like slaves to men during that time, Antigone still shows her passionate and solid feelings and actions to people who think that she is just a gentle and fragile object. Antigone seems to be stronger and more successful than Marjane because she makes sure that her voice is heard by the king and people.
