Perfection is impossible. Making mistakes is a part of our daily lives, but do we make those mistakes on purpose? Are our decisions based solely on the art of measurement? Which is when the benefits outweigh the cost. According to Socrates, we base all our decisions on the amount of pain and pleasure we get from an action. Basically, if the benefits outweigh the cost then we tend to lean towards that decision. For example, a thief steals an expensive watch without anyone noticing, then he sells it for a huge price and makes a big profit. According to Socrates, the thief made this unlawful decision because the benefits of him making a lot of money outweighed the cost of him getting caught. Likewise, there was more pleasure than pain in his decision. …show more content…
Being a young kid, who loved technology, this new console was the only thing on my mind. I did not have a job and my parents didn’t have much money, so I had to figure out a way to earn some quickly. Therefore, I went straight to my dad, but being the man that he is today, there had to be a lesson involved. He made a deal with me that whatever money I could make he would give me the same amount in return. The PlayStation at the time was highly priced at 400$. I started earning money by doing chores around the house. Weekend by weekend I would work all day. Mowing the lawn, raking leaves, cleaning my dad’s office, cleaning the house, and anything that would get me that extra …show more content…
We don’t make every mistake on purpose, but the ones we do make on purpose, are avoidable. Looking back at the situations we purposely do wrong it seems that the benefits always outweighed the cost. Very few people can avoid thinking in that manner. In conclusion, this incident was wrong for many reasons. First, stealing is wrong under any circumstances. In the car, I had a thought process of which Socrates explains as the art of measurement. I recognized the benefits, which was a new PlayStation and the cost, which at the time was nothing because I thought I wasn’t going to get caught. Second, is that not only do I think that way, but every human does too. If going back in time for a second chance I wouldn’t change any part of that situation. That Situation taught me honesty and helped me realize that doing the right thing means a lot, Not only to yourself but to others as well. Making the right choice morally develops responsibility in yourself and earns trust from others. These two things are so important to oneself. That’s why I will always try to do the right
perform virtuous acts creates the desire to do the right thing for its own sake
Making the moral right decision is never seen on paper. What could be seen as the right thing to do, may not be the right thing for other people. Also, making decisions and then having to face them later on, can impose a difficult problem for many people. Many of us have made a decision that we end up regretting later on. In the healthcare field, decision making could be life and death of a patient
Socrates explains that his goal was not to teach the people of Athens, but to serve them like his mother did. Using his method called “the Socratic method” which is also found in the reading Euthyphro, he defines a good act as something that is good because it has value towards our efforts making us happier and better people rather than the Gods consider it to be a good act. As you can see, the Gods and the higher people from Athens didn’t agree on Socrates views which were the reason for his early death by poison (hemlock) condemned by the upper people of Athens. He stated that happiness was found by putting less attention to the whole body but rather to the soul of one’s body. The goal of his “Socratic method” was to clear the way of knowledge by showing where ignorance was. He was a person open to all knowledge but viewed it in a different way most people would. He admitted to himself being an ignorant person but a person with passion and knowledge to where his views are and where his mindset is. He explained that happiness didn’t involve in someone’s length of life but mostly the quality of someone’s life. For example, Benito Mussolini an Italian politician and creation of fascism, he states “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.” I’d have to agree myself that I’d rather live one day as a strong ferocious beast with pride than 100 years being a weak prey not knowing when life can get better. In Socrates views on this he presents an argument as to what happiness is that is as powerful today as when he first discussed it over 2400 years ago. Basically, Socrates is concerned to establish two main points: 1) happiness is what all
In today’s modern society it is known for people to be a little too concerned with the way people perceive them. What do you think when a person says they want to be perfect, do you think appearance, money, knowledge, or maybe even social status? The pursuit of perfection should not be a standard of modern society due to the effects it has on one’s health and social life.
... morality is more important in making a decision than anything else and it is important for one to understand that he/she should uphold his/her personal standards before anyone else's wants, desires, or beliefs are adhered to. An ethical decision that does not uphold one's personal moral beliefs is not a good decision and shouldn't be made. Something that will bring good into one's life is a decision that is made upholding their personal moral beliefs, whether or not that decision agrees with the ethical stance on the issue. It is the individual's responsibility to make a moral decision regardless of the ethical standing in order to achieve this good. Society wants most of the people to do what is right most of the time, encouraging the people to be moral in their decisions, causing good in our everyday life, even concerning the most minute details of our lives.
Our actions are based on our surroundings, we use what is around us to help us adapt and become better human beings. Another point of view on this issue might be that our choices can be influenced by people around us, although sometimes it may not best in our interest to become a follower. For example, we may go along with a decision of our follow classmates, helping us had guidance in our decision making process. Values and morals can not only guide but inspire and motivate us, giving us energy for doing something meaningful. Therefore I believe we must be honest with ourselves, recognizing the difference between right and wrong. Of course, there are some people who just cannot do the right thing, no one lives up to all their ideals, but I believe people are more honored to have some sense of morals and values that only make us look or feel good and just to things to make themselves look like they are a better person. In all honestly everyone is different and I would like to believe that kindness is passed down. Like the saying goes a smile is contiguous and sometimes that is all someone one needs to realize life is not all that bad. To leave off I would like to end this with Immanuel Kant, he
At first glance, a world without any mistakes would be a utopia. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Mistakes are essential to learning and deciphering right from wrong. Even some of the most useful inventions today were created by mistake. Mistakes are a crucial part of the learning process and can help build up character or strength over time. Humans frequently make errors, therefore, mistakes shouldn’t be perceived negatively.
To answer this question, we must consider what the right thing to do was. Moral reasoning poses two questions: What is the right thing to do? and What are the virtues of traits of a person who lives life well. Let’s look at the first question. What is the right thing to do?
According to the idea of the ‘state of nature’ humans are primarily driven by self-interest── suggesting that self-interest is intuitive (Thomas 134). When one’s morality comes in conflict with their immediate self-interest, they are presented with a choice. If self-interest is intuitive, it could be thought that they would choose the latter. However, to act in accordance with the morally right is also in alignment with their self interest because 1. Being known to have made an immoral decision would cause censure from others, and 2.

Some of the values that guide me to make decisions are my relationship with God, caring for my family and myself, caring for others, achieving my education, obtaining my career, and my integrity. My relationship with God keeps me focused on what is important. Care for others and myself, I will always try my best to help those in need, like my family, peers, and anyone else. My educational goals will lead to my desired career to be a social worker. My integrity keeps me sincere and honest in everything I do.
There are two kinds of people in the world; the ones that believe that the consequences of an action outweigh the importance of intention, and those that feel that intentions are all that matter. Consequences are measurable outcomes that are a direct result of our actions. Intentions are the thoughts behind a person’s actions. They are the reason that a person chooses to do something. Consequences and intentions both correlate with action. Intention comes before the action itself, and consequences are yielded once the action is complete. In general consequences are thought of as negative, while intentions are typically considered in a positive sense. However, this paper will explain why consequences are more important to consider than one’s
We often think that our main goals are linked to perfection, however, we are unaware of the devastating effect this unattainable concept has on our outlook on life when we cannot achieve it. Though the textbook definition of perfection is, “the quality or condition of being perfect and without flaws”, it is a vice that harbors many doubts and insecurities and holds us back from things we want to do for fear of not being good. Perfection is a concept that cannot be achieved as it does not exist.
Mistakes are actually a very influential part of a person’s upbringing in life. Mistakes shape a person’s character to make them who they are today. A mistake can teach someone many different life lessons that will better them as a person and make their lives more enjoyable. A person will commit a mistake usually when he or she is distracted. Distraction is the number one cause of mistakes in our world today. Many people are afraid of making mistakes, so they play it safe in life and don’t strive to achieve everything they are capable of achieving. This is a very bad thing. People should not be afraid of the potential mistakes there are to be made. Instead, they should focus more on the great lengths they could go in life by pursuing their goals. Mistakes will happen on life’s journeys,
Now we will consciously or unconsciously make decisions which we think are for the best for us, for the ones we care for, or for the society or organisation as a whole. In order to make wiser decisions we should know what contributes in making a good or a bad choice. We should know what all options are there available to us and mak...
