Perception is the process of understanding what information your senses are receiving in order to gain knowledge on what you are witnessing/seeing. The following quote explains more technically, what perception is; “Perception is the process by which you become aware of objects, events, and especially people through your senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound.” (DeVito, J.A., 2015). Some of the ways in which perception is encountered is through the ‘process of perception’, Asch’s ‘configural model and ‘perceptual accentuation’. Each of these forms of perception relate to my own misjudgement of Jake earlier in the year. Asch’s configural model explores how I latched on to Jakes central traits including his rudeness and passive behaviour, and from there formed my impression around what I initially assumed, that he was a typical hooligan. The process of perception further showed me how this impression of Jake, which was picked up by my senses, organised into categories that I had mentally created and was based on my personal experiences with people who feature similar characteristics, was inaccurately created. From here I organised which schemata I felt Jake fitted best and formed my final interpretation of him. The idea of perceptual accentuation makes sense to me and I am aware of how naturally this comes to humans after analyzing how I assumed other characteristics of Jake, based on the ones I initially saw. Although all of these three areas of perception are similar, they each feature individual factors which gave me insight to my misjudgment. I feel that perceptual distortions are to blame for my mistake, although I also recognize how it is instinctive for humans to act this way in order to gather information on the subject, however false it may be. Perception is now a more common thought of mine, I have learned to become more aware of what I assume of people and why I approach the situations like this. It is clear to me that my perceptions of people and objects can be inaccurate and misguided through multiple different structures of perception, and from this I will learn to think deeper into what my initial perception really
