Summary of Film The Peanut Butter Falcon is a film set in Outer Banks, North Carolina. The main character Zak is a young man with Down syndrome who runs away from a residential nursing home because he wanted to attend a wrestling school run by his idol called the Salt Water Redneck as well as become a pro wrestler. One night with the encouragement of another resident, Carl, he finally succeeds in escaping, and through wild circumstances, he meets Tyler who was a fisherman on the run for stealing crab pods from two thugs and the two begin on an unforgettable adventure. My preconceived ideas before watching the film were no different than after watching the film. I grew up interacting with people that have Down syndrome and they are some of the happiest people who have such a positive outlook on life. I see them as human, able to fit in and function as a valuable asset to our society. It is disgusting how Zak was treated by Glen, the manager of the nursing home, and by the kid taunting him to jump into the lake. This just validates the fact that there are bullies in our world, and people with disabilities often become easy targets. Analysis of Film: I think the filmmaker did a great job showing various reactions and interactions that people have with a person who has a disability. To Zak’s co-resident, Carl, at the nursing home, he was ordinary because he valued Zak as a person with dreams and was even an accomplice to his successful escape. He showed him how to leave through the window bars, and later when questioned where he was, refused to let Zak out. To his caretaker, Eleanor, initially he was stereotyped as unintelligent and
