Both the United States Patriot Act and Extraordinary Rendition have been the focus of many individuals for many years. Having been created to fight terrorism, it has been limiting the rights of United States Citizens and foreign citizens for a very long time. While the Patriot Act has not been physically threatening, the Extraordinary Rendition has taken it a large leap forward. Thus, depriving individuals the right to not have cruel and unusual punishment used against them. While both have been deemed useful, it has come at a very high price which the government must keep under tight wraps.
The rights of many individuals have been limited after the terrorist attacks of October 26, 2001 when the United States government introduced a program known as the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act’s main provision gave the government permission to access any records under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance At. While it may be useful, it turns some purely curious people into suspected terrorists. Title four and title eight of the Patriot Act has given a broad definition of terrorism. So vague that if a newspaper defended a terrorist group then they are deemed suspects. What happened to free speech in America? The Patriot Act has also given power to the police to secretly enter my home and search without my acknowledgment or permission. They can wiretap my phone. Imagine how people with family in forging countries such as Syria or Iraq would feel if all they are doing is keeping in contact with their families only to be blacklisted as a suspected terrorist. The government would be under the belief that once they try to go back it is because they have sufficient evidence or because the suspects would know that they are been kept under surveillance.
