In Pastoralia by George Saunders, Sanders uses children to help explore and challenge the idea of Pastoral by the relationship between parents and their children. Saunders explore a new meaning to the Pastoral Mode of lituare. Marty is a worker at the amusement park and sends his son, Eddie, to an expensive private school. Mary becomes very apprehensive when the company announces their plan to “meld themselves into a sleeker organization.” If he was fired along with his partner Jeannine, they would be unable to pay for the son tution. Marty begins talking down the school to Eddie to spare his feelings. Marty under his anger and egotistical manner has a bit of compassion. The man’s father worked at Kenner Beef with a man named Lank who has a metal plate in his head and goes into funk forgetting to do his job, but the Man’s father would cover for him. He would double his job. When the father died, Lank sent his widow a check for one thousand dollars because of this situation, The unnamed man refuses to give up on Janet. He is hoping one day Janet will repay him for his kindness, but I believe this will not happen because Janet is self-absorbed, and has little to no money. The unnamed man has a lot of compassion when dealing with others: he is a great father to his sick child, he gives Janet money for her son, and finally, he always has Janets back in his daily evaluations. I believe he learned how to be compassionate from his father, and when he is compassionate, he feels closer to his late father. Without this relationship in his life, the unnamed man would have let go of Janet a long time ago. This relationship represent Pastoral because they are “farming” people, making sure their every need is cared for. They are shepherds to friends, family and
