Although I do not have a clear vision of what field I would like to go into in the future, I do have many interests and passions leading me towards discovery. One of which is my passion for animals. I have always had an interest in animals, which sparked from having pets at home as well as pet sitting for many of my neighbors. Sophomore year, I was introduced to biology for the first time, and found that the class was quite interesting to me. But, I found that I was more interested in learning about animal biology than human biology. This provoked me with the idea of potentially going into veterinary-science. I also have a passion for service, and helping others. This passion grew through being involved in Interact Club at my high school. The
Vet Tech has always been an option for me, helping animals is something that is very interesting. It was introduced in 1989, the AVMA officially adopted the name “Vet Tech.” In 1998, emergency vets debut on Animal Planet. And in 2008, student population grows from 500 to 700. There are about 17,000 people employed in the career field chosen. Some of the common trends of the job would be, working at Zoos, Aquariums, Boarding Kennels, and Wildlife sanctuaries. These jobs are usually found working in an animal clinic or hospitals and sometimes at farms because that is the “normal” areas for this occupation. In this career there are some general duties such as: Observe animals behavior and conditions, Provide nursing care, Bathe animals, Clip nails, groom animals hair, keep animals calm during exams or procedures. The more specific duties of the job would be to: take x-rays of animals and develop them, get utensils and prepare the animals for surgery, keep and record patient's history. Most of the clinics are open 24 hours. There is not anything that is unusual about the number of hours/nature of the job. (Bls.gov.vettech)
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
Animals are becoming more like family members to most modern day families and they think it is necessary for all animals to have the appropriate attention and care. All in all, this career is a very positive and interesting field to pursue.
So, does the veterinary profession sound fun to you? It requires a lot of hard work through the schooling, but the daily job being with animals makes up for it!
Being a veterinarian is a great career choice because of the great interactions with varied types of animals, the amount of aid you can supply them, and the great feeling after helping the injured or sickly animals to their health. Some of the top vet schools are Cornell University (#1 in Ithaca, NY), UC Davis (#2 Davis, CA), and Colorado State University (#3 in Fort Collins, CO).
Growing up in rural Texas, you have to learn to care for the things that are important to you. There really is not much to entertain yourself with so many adolescents become vulnerable to trouble. Luckily for me, I grew up with the responsibilities that came with growing up on a farm. I had things to care for on a daily basis and for the longest time, the things I cared for most were animals. I exhibited livestock in my youth and this is where I spent the majority of my time. I would come home from football or basketball practice and go straight up to the barn to tend to my animals. Along with feeding and cleaning, I would often administer vaccinations and antibiotics when needed. Because of my interest in medicine and science coupled with my love for animals some could say that I was destined to become veterinarian. The major I chose, animal science, even supported that notion. However, it was not until the summer after my freshman year of undergraduate where I realized it was human medicine that my heart was yearning for.
Just recently I have been accepted to Texas A&M University I have also decided my degree choice will be biomedical science. With a biomedical science degree I have over fifty career choices I can go into. Also, this is my backup plan if I am not accepted into vet. School right away. The choices of careers range form agricultural economist, animal breeder, dentist, game manager, veterinarian assistant, and even zoologist. I have decided that what ever my career will be, it will be in agriculture and will deal with animals. Animals are so interesting and tricky they can’t tell you what is wrong with them like people can. With animals you have to find out for yourself.
Personally, I love the idea of becoming Veterinarian. Since I have been here at UNH, I have struggled a lot with my classes. Not only was understanding the material hard for me but also being able to put what I learn into real-life situations was troubling for me too. When I am in Lab for most of my classes, I feel pressured and nervous that I mess up the whole procedure because I am too focused on doing it right that I manage to do it wrong. Some days I felt like maybe this major was not for me, but I didn't want to give up because it was all about doing what I love the most.
Through my experiences, I have learned the reality of veterinary medicine. It is not about playing with puppies and kittens. My clients might not appreciate me, my patients might be difficult, I may get frustrated, and I might not make much money. Yet veterinary medicine is about more than that. It is a career with purpose, a lifelong source of challenge, personal growth, fulfilled academic curiosity, and opportunities to impact lives, both human and animal. In return, I offer a strong scientific aptitude, along with a diverse background and natural empathy. Sadly, being a veterinarian may not be in the books for me, however I would still love to at least become a veterinary technician. Becoming a veterinary technician is much more affordable, and can actually be accomplished through community college or even just continuing with the job I already have. Locally, MiraCosta College offers a veterinary assistant program, similar to being a veterinary technician but without the certification (Veterinary Assistant Program Overview). Students receive a certificate of completion and are expected to be able to perform many tasks that the job requires by the end of the course. I am a biology and chemistry major at Harford Community College and am working to obtain an associate of science degree in biology and chemistry- calculus based physics from HCC. My plan is to transfer to the University of Maryland and study Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine with the goal of entering Veterinary School. I have been working towards veterinary school since I was fourteen years old. My passion for the subject began while I was working at Olney Farm, a horse farm in Fallston, MD. At three in the morning, the phone rang. A trembling voice relayed the news that my friend had fallen into a coma due to an inoperable brain aneurysm. A few days later, her family decided to stop life support after confirmation that she was completely brain-dead. The fact that nothing could be done for her in this day and age, despite all our technological advancements, was a great shock to me. In addition, the fact that she was younger than me made me realize how short and precious each life truly is. Her death inspired me to pursue medicine so that one day, others in similarly hopeless situations, would have a chance to survive. My dream is that one day, I will contribute to bringing medicine one step closer to curing someone with a currently untreatable disease.
My passion for psychology started since I was in middle school; I have been surprised on many psychology theories and how captivating psychology would help to explain human behaviors. Therefore, I have begun my desire to concentrate on researching about psychology, specified in the cognitive neuroscience area, particularly on human memory and languages.
