Parables to the Belief and Life of Christians
What is a Parable? In my coursework, I will establish the definition
of a Parable, Biblical quotes and references, and the reasons for
their use. I will establish these facts:
· The use of Parables in Luke’s Good News Gospel
· Examples of Parables that Jesus used
· My personal opinions on the subject of Parables
I will use several different sources of information to complete the
essay questions stated below. These sources include various Internet
websites; books and my teacher.
The following questions (below) on the subject of Parables will be
answered in this coursework:

through Parables.
B Discuss the meaning and relevance of Parables to the belief and
life of Christians today.

(A) Describe from Luke’s Gospel, how Jesus presented his teachings
through Parables
The term ‘Parable’ was taken from the Greek word ‘Parabole’ meaning an
analogy or a comparison. However Jesus was not Greek, he was Jewish.
The word ‘Parable’ in Hebrew is translated as ‘Marshal’, which means
sayings, proverbs, similes, or close to an allegory. Both of these
definitions can also be referred to as ‘earthly stories with heavenly
meanings.’ It is made simple so the reader can have a greater
understanding of the story. A good example of an allegory is the
Parable of the Good Samaritan. Most Parables link into the Sermon on
the Mount, due to it’s morals including forgiveness.

Parables often come up in everyday conversation and in this way the
Good News is spread. The phrase, “the Lost Son has returned”, has been
mentioned, not knowing what it really means. Many Parables are so
simple that if given thought, even a child could understand them.
The meanings from the Parables Jesus told could be converted into a
modern day story, and they would still contain the hidden messages
which Jesus intended to spread round Israel. This shows that they are
still relevant.
Parables were the words spoken through Jesus Christ, the Son of Man. I
therefore believe that no matter what century or decade that one is
in, Parables will always be relevant to not just Christians, but all
people , and the teachings and morals provided in the hidden meanings
will be valued forevermore.
For the sake of this study, Luke’s Gospel plays an important role in establishing the identity of the members of the community. Indeed, “without Luke’s Gospel our visual images of the Christian story would be impoverished” because “Luke’s Gospel [can be considered] the aesthetic teacher of Christian senses in hearing and speech through story and song and in sight through the many artistic renderings of his stories.” Luke accomplishes this feat by using cultural conventions surrounding hospitality and banqueting to “illustrate such important facets of Jesus’ teaching as generosity to the poor, forgiveness of sinners, humility rather than social power, and the priority given to the word of God.”
After reading Courageous Faith: Life Lessons from Old Testament Heroes, the biblical hero I most relate to is Joshua. Joshua succeeded Moses as the leader to lead the Israelites into the promise land. The promise land was prosperous but filled with many strong cities and armies. Joshua had to place his faith in God and His promise that the Israelites will conquer the land. Joshua and the new generation of Israelites had faith in God and they went into the promise land even without a battle plan. They placed faith in God before their fears and concerns. “God was telling Joshua to put Him first, and then he would be prosperous and successful” (Hindson, 77). Joshua obeyed God’s battle plan instead of being afraid and make his own battle plan. The
Through the parable, Jesus wanted to notify the Greco-Roman world what he thought of the Pharisees, lawyers, tax collectors, and rich men. Jesus was straight forward and purposeful with his symbols in the parable. Jesus wanted the Greco-Roman world to know the Pharisees were self-righteous, thus unholy, and the tax collectors and elites were sinners, thus unholy as well. Jesus wanted this parable to reach all the families in Israel and Rome. Jesus wanted this parable to teach them that the only holy figure in this story is the father who represents an all-loving and all-merciful divine figure. He wandered Judea preaching about the validity of the jewish laws. This gained him a large following. Roman officials caught wind of this and were scared of an uprising. When a person hears the word “parable” they often automatically think of stories told by Jesus. Although Jesus did tell a lot of parables, he was not the only biblical figure to use parables. One example of an Old Testament figure telling a parable is the prophet Nathan’s parable to King David about the rich man seizing and killing the poor man’s sheep. 2 Samuel 12: 1-14. David gets very angry at the rich man and orders him killed before realizing the rich man is himself. The reasons Nathan used a parable are the same reasons Jesus used parables: discretion, to avoid defensiveness, and to stimulate deeper reflection. Parables are discreet because no one can get mad at the parable teller because even if he is talking about you, he doesn’t actually say your name, so you can remain anonymous. Parables avoid defensiveness because if you don’t think the parable is talking about you, you are more willing to listen and understand the wrongdoings in the parable, even if they are your own wrongdoings. Finally, they stimulate deeper reflection because they are stories, and while later remembering and thinking more about the enjoyable story, you can get more meaning from it. By using parables, Jesus helps us, his readers, understand his messages better.
This parable is supposed to be a narrative for the reader to help interpret and understand the significance of faith, but as for all the parables it might be extremely heard for people today to understand the connection between the words and the actual meaning. As we read through the New Testament, we come upon many instances where Jesus uses parables to teach in ways that were very unique to the day. Until this point, many had never experienced this type of teaching and it proved to be an effective method of imparting knowledge to his listeners. A parable is a story that illustrates a moral or religious lesson. During Jesus’s ministry He told many parables such as The Parable of the Sower, Parable of the Good Samaritan, The Rich Fool, Parable of the Mustard Seed, and Parable of the Lost Sheep just to name a few.
What are parables of Jesus Christ? The word parable in general may mean the placing of two or more artifacts together to make a comparison or explain an ideology. This same concept could be related to the parables of Jesus Christ the son of God. Some people may choose to define these in various meanings depending on their own understanding. However, in my opinion, a parable is basically an analogy consisting of human circumstances that is accompanied with a spiritual or biblical lesson. Altogether, there are thirty-two parables; which could be found in the books of Mathew, Mark and Luke. Out of all these parables, eighteen of them are found in Luke and ten in Mathew. The eighteen parables found in Luke include, the Lost Coin, the Lost Son, the Unrighteous Steward, the Rich Man and Lazarus, the Unprofitable Servants, the Unrighteous Judge, the Pharisee and Publican, the Pounds, the Two Debtors, the Good Samaritan, the Friend at Midnight, the Rich Fool, the Watchful Servants, the Barren Fig Tree, the Chief Seats, the Great Supper, the Rash Builder, and the Rash King. The ten in Mathew include, the Laborers in the Vineyard, the Two Sons, the Marriage of the King's Son, the Ten Virgins, the Talents, the Tares, the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, the Draw Net, and the Unmerciful Servant. Again, the parables of Jesus Christ could be compared to a class of students with a teacher in the front. Basically Jesus Christ was the teacher and the whole world would be considered as the students. Out of all the parables of Jesus Christ, the main ones I will be talking about will be the parable of the good samaritan, and the parable of the sower.
