The colonization of the Pacific Basin is one of the most important things in human history. According to history, the migration of the first humans into what is called Near Oceania began around 40,000 years ago and over time produced considerable cultural, linguistic, and genetic diversity in Oceania and Polynesia. There were no original inhabitants, it was bare land.
The colonizers came from what are now called Austronesian speakers from Asia led to the development of the Lapita culture in the area referred to as Western Oceania. This led to the colonization of the islands in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The European presence in the Pacific Basin was largely confined to explorers, missionaries, merchants and conquerors from Spain and Portugal.
In 1900, Senator Albert Beveridge, a Republican from Indiana, gave a speech in response to “The Philippine Question”. Beveridge was asked by senators and members of the House of Representatives to give a speech on the Philippines. At this time, the United States was in discussion of what the future steps would be after the Spanish-American War, which resulted in a win and subsequent acquisition of the Philippines. Senator Beveridge responded to the idea that the United States should stay in the Philippines for its available resources for the United States, its impact it gives the United States in the Pacific Ocean, and the destiny the United States has in spreading democracy. Senator Albert Beveridge makes a strong argument of why the United States should stay in the Philippines; his arguments of commerce, world powers, and race are all strong for the United States, but there is a strong resistance from the Filipino people and their vocal leader Emilio Aguinaldo.

Imperialism is a progressive force for both the oppressors (mother country) and the oppressed (colony), majorly occurring during the late 19th and early 20th century. It had more negative effects than positive effects due to its domination to other nations.
Around the 1700s regions in Europe were using the method of imperialism to not only expand but to economically benefit as well. Thus imperialism was not only a form of government but also a form of economy. Furthermore it is when regions extend their power and wealth through their military force and diplomacy. Specifically speaking the Spaniards and British were two different groups of Europeans who colonized different regions around the world. As a result of doing so, the Spaniards who conquered Latin America and the British who conquered Southeast Asia causes depopulation along with cultural changes within the land they colonized.
In 1898, in an effort to free Cuba from the oppression of its Spanish colonizers, America captured the Philippines. This brought about questions of what America should do with the Philippines. Soon, controversy ensued both in the American political arena as well as among its citizens. Throughout its history, America had always been expansionistic, but it had always limited itself to the North American continent. Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, however, there emerged a drive to expand outside of the continent. When America expanded to the Philippines, the policy it followed was a stark break from past forms of expansionism. Despite much controversy, America followed the example of the imperialistic nations in Europe and sought to conquer the Philippines as an imperialist colony that they would rule either directly or indirectly.
The United States war with Spain was commonly called the “splendid little war,” but the repercussions of this war were far from its adorning nickname. Unrest in the Philippines and political conflict on the mainland led to anti-imperialist feelings in the United States, affecting territories around the world and forward expansion of the nation. The kickoff to this long-standing trend of tension was the Spanish-American War. After the war, America faced Constitutional limitations and moral obligations surrounding newly freed Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. With heavy, empire-hungry European influences like France and Britain, the United States wanted an empire of their own, but not all Americans were on board.
The First "Europeans" reached the Western Hemisphere in the late 15th century. Upon arrival they encountered a rich and diverse culture that had already been inhabited for thousands of years. The Europeans were completely unprepared for the people they stumbled upon. They couldn't understand cultures that were so different and exotic from their own. The discovery of the existence of anything beyond their previous experience could threaten the stability of their entire religious and social structure. Seeing the Indians as savages they made them over in their own image as quickly as possible. In doing so they overlooked the roots that attached the Indians to their fascinating past. The importance of this past is often overlooked. Most text or history books begin the story of the Americas from the first European settlement and disregard the 30,000 years of separate, preceding cultural development (Deetz 7).
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, China face one biggest foreign force – American imperialism. American imperialism is the policy that the United States aimed to control other country in economy, political and culture. America was also in the act of anti-Communist. Moreover, according to “A Bomb and Paper Tiger”: America’s growing arsenal of nuclear weapons made it clear that a war would place China at a great disadvantage” (394). Although American imperialism is a threat to China, it actually helps China increase its revolution and improve its status in the world.
In the novella Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad’s arguments over the hypocrisy of imperialism are completely valid. He seems to express a powerful condemnation for the hypocritical operations of imperialism - and rightfully so, due to the dehumanizing results that it renders. “Imperialism occurs when a strong nation takes over a weaker nation or region and dominates its economic, political, or cultural life,” Thomas Caswell writes in Source B.
