Topic: Standardized tests are poor reflections of students’ abilities

I. Before approaching college, students are required to participate in standardized testing to test their knowledge and see if they are prepared to attend a college. Though, are these tests really accurate on assessing the intelligence of students nationwide?
A. Teaching to the test
1. Undermine innovation and critical thinking
B. Small portion of meaningful human capabilities
1. Focuses on math and reading
2. Neglects creativity, leadership, integrity, etc.
C. Selectively discriminatory
1. Special education receive little accommodations
2. English language learners
II. Many have come to the conclusion that these forms of testing are promoting what is called “teaching to the test”, which has brought up a few concerns for parents and students.
A. Limits the time used on subjects not related to the standardized test
B. Undermines the necessity of critical thinking and innovation

It is known that within schooling if there is a child with some form of learning disability that they are accommodated for their shortcomings, though this is not the case for the standardized tests. Students with disabilities are granted little to no accommodations during the testing and are expected to take the tests in the same way as those without disabilities. Also, the students that are still learning English as there second language are at a disadvantage as well. Students still learning English are required to take the tests in English before they have come close to mastering the language they are studying. Both the students who suffer from disabilities and the students that are not fluent in English are at a disadvantage when taking the standardized
