Oscar Pistorius is Released on House Arrest
Following South African law, Pistorius is released from prison on house arrest.
After serving less than a year of a five-year sentence, Oscar Pistorius is released from prison on Monday, which leaves more than four years of his five year sentence. He was convicted of the equivalent of manslaughter for the killing of his former girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was dubbed “Blade Runner” because although his legs were amputated as a baby, he competed on special blade-like legs as a sprint runner. He came to international attention in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games where he competed against able bodied sprinters.

However, the Department of Correctional Services at the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison say he was released a day early to avoid a media circus. His family said they are happy he is home and would ensure that he followed all the rules of his parole.
Pistorius’ release was made possible by a South African rule in sentencing guidelines, which states that any prisoner that isn’t dangerous to the public should do only one-sixth of any custodial sentence behind bars. During the house arrest he will be allowed to leave the house at specified times to go to work, church, or to buy groceries.
Steenkamp Family Reaction as Oscar Pistorius is Released
An attorney for the Steenkamps released a statement from the family that said they were uninterested as Oscar Pistorius is released considering the fact that they had lost their daughter. Back in August, the family had publicly gone on record to question the court verdict in August. They said that since nothing would bring their daughter back, it didn’t really matter if he was paroled or not.
