Ophelia and the Four Elements Ophelia in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a play on the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water, which are all essential to life. The way that Ophelia committed suicide was that she drowned herself in a stream. “Apparently Shakespeare intended her to be a minor character, using her sparingly and almost forgetfully throughout the plot.” (Wagner 94) She was a minor character until she committed suicide, and this is when she became a major part to the plot. He’s going to lie to you to get what he wants, you can’t trust him.(Shakespeare 1.3.114-135) “She is scared of her father and dare not disobey him, even when he tells her to play the spy on Hamlet, she is scared of life itself when things go wrong.” (Terry 162) Her love with Hamlet went wrong and her father seemed to make it worse. Ophelia was so confused throughout the entire play about what her role was in the relationship. Overall Ophelia represented the element air in a bad way and what one should not do to have good communication and good social
