J.R.R. Tolkien, an English poet, academic, and philologist, taught at the University of Oxford. Tolkien, likewise a modern author of his era, explored social and political ideas in his writings, like The Hobbit. In it Tolkien explores the Nazi party and its adversaries, tying in his own WWII experience, as a British Soldier into a novel. A novel on one of the World’s toughest and longest battles; the clash of light and darkness for power, domination, and richness which affects our everyday life.

Light and darkness endure in a constant conflict for power. When Thorin and Co. make their way over the misty mountains after having received nourishment and rest from Elrond. The dwarves find themselves in a predicament during a thunderstorm. After seeking shelter on the Goblin’s “front porch” they become prisoners of the Goblin’s:” ...and hurried them along” into the tunnels:”Now there came a glimmer of red light before them… when they stumbled into a big cavern.” Then the dwarves got chained and dragged to the far end of the cavern where the goblins placed them, and Thorin advanced on to be questioned by the Great Goblin. When the Great Goblin found that Thorin carried Biter, the Great Goblin lashed out in rage and was about to attack Thorin:” … all the lights in the great cavern went out and the great fire went poof! … that scattered piercing white sparks all among the goblins… burning holes into the Goblins.” Afterwards every goblin fell over the other attributable to the blinding smoke, and Gandalf, taking advantage of the situation, quickly approached the Great Goblin:”Suddenly a sword flashed in its own light… right through the Great Goblin.” The dwarves heard a fierce and quiet voice and Gandalf led ...

...d shone before him and drawn his feet towards it.” This light of hope and redemption in the midst of the greed-smelling chamber makes Bilbo want to have it and keep it for himself:”... but he lifted it, shut his eyes, and put it in his deepest pocket.” Later Bilbo grew tired of the greed and violence between light and darkness, and therefore gives the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elves to help them negotiate and end the standoff, with the dwarves, as rapidly as possible.

Hence the world, a place we think as peaceful and calm, has extreme forces of nature, light and dark, who will not give up their fight against one another. They have been fighting since the beginning, and until the end of time they will fight mercilessly. There will be much destruction, but it is unstoppable. Light and dark has its course, and to its course it will stay.
