"On Entering a New Place" by Barry Lopez. This story took me a few times of reading to get the meaning of the story. What I got from the story is that when you go to a new place you're not always going to know what's there. There is always room for adventure. Barry Lopez's view to life is close to the way that I thought about college. Before registering for this class I had no idea on what to expect. Now that I have a little experience, I know what to expect from this class. One of the thing's that got to me from this passage was when he talked about how he was moving around in the van. In the passage I think that the Barry Lopez is trying to convey his message by moving around. I think he is trying to get to the point that their are many way
After he got out of college, Jack worked for a magazine company because he wanted to write a book. After a couple of years, he got writer’s block, so he starts to walk the Camino de Santiago for ideas. But, it doesn't help. When Jack meets Tom, Joost the Dutchman, and Sarah, they show him other perspectives because he always looks at things one way. These fellow walkers show him that sometimes there is only one meaning to the story. Sarah responds to something that Jack says by saying, “Well, Jack, maybe a dog fight near a cheese farm is simply a dog fight near a cheese farm.” Jack says excitedly, “AH! Okay... That's good. That... is very... good! Maybe I should adopt a more conservative attitude instead of trying to tickle meaning out of every curve in the road. Oh, Christ... I haven't had an original thought in months! Writer's block.” Jack is trying to find inner peace. He is trying to write a book, but he is getting into details that he does not need. Because of being over detailed, he can neither write a book, nor achieve inner peace with
It’s fair to say that life on the road is something most people do not desire, as a way to live out their days; but a young man named Chris McCandless believed it was necessary to avoid the venomous grips of society. McCandless goes as far as to venture out to the rest of the United States and even crossing borders to achieve his true destination, Alaska. He shows us living such a life can hold many unique and wonderful experiences. Consequently, he also shows us the difficulties that most do not expect upon leaving for such a journey. Many speak about the advantages, like the freedom they enjoy, and the wondrous relationships formed along the way; but even so, some disadvantages outweigh the advantages, like the
I walked around unsteadily all day like a lost baby, far away from its pack. Surrounded by unfamiliar territory and uncomfortable weather, I tried to search for any signs of similarities with my previous country. I roamed around from place to place and moved along with the day, wanting to just get away and go back home. This was my first day in the United States of America.
There are a variety of pathways and elements, which enables individual transition into a New World. ‘Into the World’ is about people choosing the next pathway into their life by their own determination, experiences and support which enables them to go beyond their original location and narrow view of the world. ‘Billy Elliot’ relates to the elective ‘Into the World’ as the film is about new possibilities opening up, determination, family support and individual growth. Two related texts that show other kinds of transitions into new worlds include an article on the Queensland School of Excellence titled ‘Pas de deux’ from the ‘Australian Educator’ on the 03/05/04 and a documentary by a Youth Program called ‘Typo Station’ from Sunday Sunrise. To demonstrate different pathways into a new world, these three texts use different types of techniques.
The transformation Christopher goes through is that of which many are familiar. The desire for independence and understanding was driving the course of the plot, a journey readers can easily see themselves in. The novel mimics real life by getting into the genuine fear of change that many who have been in similar situations can relate to. Chris’ fear is something he had to learn to conquer along his journey, just as many face seemingly enormous challenges of their own. The challenges he faces makes the book seem more similar to a reader’s own life.
I found the article, "Coming of Age in New Jersey" to be extremely interesting. It was fascinating to read about how college life differed from the time that Michael Moffatt was an undergraduate, but there were also some aspects of college that had remained the same. As I was reading, I found the section titled, "What College is REALLY Like" to be particularly interesting. In the essay, Moffatt talks about how college was a mix between academics and experiencing "college life". It was interesting because in doing this experiment, he was able to gain a dual perspective on college. He had a professor's point of view and also the point of view of the students.
Van Winkle" depicts a story of a man longing to be free, and of the transformation that occurs to him and the
Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. Choices made, whether good or bad, follow you forever and affect everyone in their path one way or another. As you venture into new phases of life or worlds or ‘grow up’, you are commonly faced with having to make difficult choices and decisions, which may change your life forever. Each choice throughout this transition can be either rewarding or challenging, depending on the individual and the obstacles that they must overcome. However, through successfully moving into the world, it can consequently bring new experiences and opportunities, growth, change, self-fulfilment, greater freedom and choice, and other consequences, may they be positive or negative. The play, ‘Educating Rita’ by Willy Russell, and the music video ‘Fast Car’ by Tracy Chapman both explore this concept of ‘Into the World’ through the use of language, visual and dramatic techniques, as they portray the beneficial and negative relatable outcomes of personal choices and transitions into a new phase of life or world.
For as long as I can remember, I have always viewed life as an adventure. Sometimes this adventure is extraordinarily fulfilling and fun, while other times it can be a lot harder to keep trekking on. This outlook has shaped my life to what it is today, and it impacts the decisions I make now that will affect my future. When I began the college search, I really didn’t know what I was looking for. When I found George Fox University, I knew instantly that this was the place I could grow into the person I dreamed of being. By attending George Fox University, I hope to discover my faith, develop skills necessary to succeed and learn more about myself and the world, as well as contribute my diverse upbringing, leadership and strong values to the
In conclusion, the journey not the arrival matters because many journeys can have the same destination but the occurrence during a journey are unique. The things gained and experience are what matters, not where the journey leads to especially in imaginative journeys.
Standing on the balcony, I gazed at the darkened and starry sky above. Silence surrounded me as I took a glimpse at the deserted park before me. Memories bombarded my mind. As a young girl, the park was my favourite place to go. One cold winter’s night just like tonight as I looked upon the dark sky, I had decided to go for a walk. Wrapped up in my elegant scarlet red winter coat with gleaming black buttons descending down the front keeping away the winter chill. Wearing thick leggings as black as coal, leather boots lined with fur which kept my feet cozy.
In life, I believe, somewhere along the line, we all lose our way. We become cynical. We become strangers to ourselves. We stray from our route. My film will show this in action by exploring a young man venturing out with nothing but a bicycle to search for his way back.
Throughout life, we are faced with endings that are challenging to accept, and those challenges can also create undesirable occurrences that are inevitable. While most transitions are uncomfortable, the process of accepting a new journey is essential for personal growth. Ending a comfortable way of life and entering into an unknown territory can be an intimidating experience which can force a person to stay in their comfort zone. Why do new experiences make individuals feel lost or undecided about their direction in life? In Transitions: Making sense of life’s changes, the author William Bridges, guides his readers through three stages of change, which include, the ending, the neutral zone, and new beginnings. According to Bridges, transitions start with an ending, however, it is the ending that starts with a beginning. Part of the beginning and ending process is an important portion of the cycle, barriers have to end in
Life is full of exploration. Twenty- seven years in my life, I have been surrounded with various people, environments, and cultures. These elements have important impact on my personalities, physical health, career choices, and many personal aspects. Sometimes I look back with nostalgia, but I gain new understandings of myself after the nostalgia. Just like T.S. Eliot describes life in his poem, “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time” ( ) . This shows me that my life can be a journey of exploration, and it full of new discovers and understandings although I have been gone through many challenges in the past. From living in poor village with
I think we all have a beautiful place in our mind. I have a wonderful place that made me happy a lot of times, years ago. But sometimes I think that I am the only person who likes this place and I'm asking myself if this place will be as beautiful as I thought when I will go back to visit it again. Perhaps I made it beautiful in my mind.
