Fat Tax It is often said that people who suffer from obesity usually experience an eating disorder, depression and health problems. My whole life I have heard that people who are overweight or obese are like that because of their genes. The discussion of whether there should be a fat tax for being overweight in the United States, one controversial issue has been the discrimination of these people. On the other hand, obesity contends an unneeded taxation due to people not being able to control their weight. Others even maintain raising junk food prices. Raising the prices on a certain product might be a better idea rather than taxing obese people, because many obese people suffer obesity from an eating condition. Also, racing prices on unhealthy food can lower its affordability and people will have less chance of buying it and affecting their health. According to Johnstone, “if the cost of doing something is too high, then fewer people are likely to do it” (1). In making this comment, Johnstone urges us to know that higher prices equals less consumption, and less people buying certain products. It is believed that by taxing obese people it could persuade them to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. Many people eat fast food due to their low prices. Advertisement greatly inspires Americans to try the latest burgers or meals. It is known that anything that is not good for consumers is more likely to result in an increase in taxes. Raising the tax makes a certain product increase in price so it will be less affordable for the consumer to consume and more likely to stop purchasing it, and it will decrease the chances for the consumer to suffer health problems or deceases. Abusing the way you eat can result in the risk of getting type 2 diabetes, because eating a lot can make you overweight and the person’s insulin won’t be as effective and that’s how a person gets this decease. According to Jones, “Long-term complications of type 2 diabetes include atherosclerosis, heart disease, stroke, end-stage renal disease, retinopathy leading to blindness, nerve damage, sexual dysfunction, frequent infections, and difficult-to-treat foot ulcers, sometimes resulting in lower limb amputation.
