He completed his B.A. in English from Bennington in 1977 and an M.A. in English from Colombia in 1981. Diction is the author’s word choice. The magazine, “Feeding Frenzy”, from Sports Illustrated by Richard Hoffer shows many types of diction. The magazine is about Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield’s boxing match in 1997. The three types of diction that stood out to me was violent, circus, and sarcastic. The author, Richard Hoffer, uses these three types of diction to show how violent, circus like, and how sarcastic the fight was to the people who saw it.
“Reese's cup, peanut butter chocolate flavor” is definitely a phrase people remember. In the commercial, William Lupo raps about the flavor of Reese’s puff cereal while in animated greenscreen kitchen.Colors of orange-yellow chocolate flash across the screen along with images of milk pouring into the cereal as Mr.lupo raps in the background saying”Reeses puffs Reeses puffs peanut butter chocolate flavor”The commercial ends with giant speakers blasting the song in the background as the product is set down on the kitchen table.Advertising is like mental hypnotization.
Many in the U.S., today, try to eat well,balanced, meals to order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They do so by purchasing their food at farmers markets or making their own meals, so their food isn’t processed or genetically modified. Even though people are trying to maintain health in order to live long lives, without medical complications, many don’t have the opportunity to pursue life like this. In “Research shows food deserts more abundant in minority neighborhoods,” the author, Kelly Brooks, portrays an anecdote and logical reasoning, from Kelly Bower’s research, to thoroughly describe the food deserts in poor minority neighborhoods and how this issue needs to be repaired.
During this chapter of The Omnivore’s Dilemma Pollan talks about fast food. This means that he is speaking to people who regularly eat fast food and those who are wondering what is in their food when they order out. As a part of this he asks biologist Todd Dawson to run fast food items through a spectrometer to see how much corn is in the food. His analyses concluded that “soda (100 percent corn), milk shake (78 percent), salad dressing (65 percent), chicken nuggets (56 percent), cheeseburger (52 percent), and French fries (23 percent)” (p. 117). This is an essay written in the MIT Sloan Management Review that presents the correlation between businesses and the issue of obesity in order to persuade businesses to take action in regards to preventing the issue. Therefore, its target audience is anyone who currently works in business or plans to do so in the future. In this review, the author begins by citing four internal and external reasons for which businesses should care about obesity: self-preservation, public criticism, employee productivity, and opportunity. The author proceeds by providing an idea as to how businesses can assist in reversing the trend. In order to do so, he analyzes what he considers to be the two sides of the obesity problem: physical activity and food consumption.
Throughout the United States many American’s go through and eat at fast food places such as, McDonalds, Burger King, and Jack ‘n the Box. Mainly unaware of the amount of weight one can gain if consuming it on a daily bases or even two times week, can cause health issues, diabetes and possibly obesity. This was the main premise for writer Dave Zinczenko essay Don’t Blame the Eater, who makes an argument that many people are becoming obese and diabetic because of the fast food they eat. He asks a regarding his concern; Shouldn 't we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast-food restaurants?, As a way to engage the general public, like parents and teenagers, he expresses his argument through his own experience when he was a teenager eating at fast food places and information on the fast food industry in regards to how many calories are in the food.
I am responding to the request to analyze Radley Balko’s article, “What You Eat Is Your Business” and make a recommendation for or against publication in The Shorthorn at University of Texas at Arlington. In order to respond, I have examined the rhetorical appeals of Balko’s piece and determined why this article should be posted in the next edition of The Shorthorn. I believe that the Shorthorn audience would be interested in what is being discussed regarding of obesity, things that could potentially affect their lifestyle as well as the professors. In “What You Eat Is Your Business”, Balko claims that obesity is the responsibility of the individual not the government, and how our government is allowing American to live an unhealthy lifestyle

Oliver mentions he’s no upper class worker, but a middle class chef, who uses information and education as his weapon. Oliver’s objective in the TedTalk conference is to present people with children, nephews, grandchildren, etc., about their eating habits and our ignorance of food. Walking through the door of Mrs. Saxton’s room in the beginning of September is like walking into a sauna on the sun. Waves of unbearable heat roll through the room and despite the efforts by the numerous amounts of fans, nothing can cool the occupants. Children and Mrs. Saxton alike despise the palpable warmth. It was this universal knowledge and shared disgust of the environment that gave us our inspiration for our pop: Chill soda. As we went through early drafts and ideas for our product, we wanted to come up with something that everyone could relate to, and Mrs. Saxton’s hot, sticky classroom seemed like the common ground we were looking for. Catchy jingles are what persuades consumers to buy more and more products that they hear about every day. This concept has been around for years and the Coca-Cola Company is no stranger to it. Back in July of 1971, Coca-Cola released the commercial, “I’d like to Buy the World a Coke” that sent their customers into chaos with over 100,000 letters being sent to the company asking for more. Rhetorical Analysis of “The Pleasures of Eating” by Wendell Berry In the article by Wendell Berry titled “The Pleasures of Eating” he tries to persuade the readers of the necessity and importance of critical thinking and approach to choosing meals and owning responsibility for the quality of the food cooked. The first element of the rhetorical structure and possibly the strongest in this documentary is pathos. Pathos refers to the emotion exhibited throughout the documentary. Food, Inc. is filled with an array of colors, sounds, stories, and images that all appeal to emotion. Miserable images of cows being slaughtered with dark music in the background, pictures of industrial factories with no sun and unhappy workers, and even a depressing and eye-opening home video of a young boy who was killed by the disease as a result of bad food were all portrayed throughout Food, Inc. Barbara Kowalcyk, mother of the late Kevin, is an advocate for establishing food standards with companies throughout the nation. When asked about her sons death, she replied, “To watch this beautiful child go from being perfectly healthy to dead in 12 days-- it was just unbelievable that this could happen from eating food.” (Food, Inc.) Obviously very devastated and still heartbroken over her loss, Kowalcyk fought
