As I contemplate a career in medicine, I hope to have broad exposure to different areas of knowledge, before acquiring depth in the medical sciences. Many political, socio-economic and technological factors are reshaping how health care is delivered in our country. Medical practitioners with broad exposure will be better prepared to recognize and respond to their impacts on the profession. In high school, I was attracted to the laboratory Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Science. There are exciting developments in the intersection of these fields that will define medical practice in the future, for instance, bio-informatics, 3D printing of organs, or wearable monitoring devices. I plan to specialize in these disciplines in my undergraduate curriculum through the academic concentration in Computational Biology or Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in the junior and senior years. I gained some exposure to the complexities of health care delivery in our society as a summer intern at a managed care organization. The course in “Health Economics,” will formally introduce me to the economics of health care and the role of health insurance and government in medical care, while acquiring data analysis and statistical skills. The similarities and differences between cultures have always piqued my interest and help me understand my own identity better. I also find the differences between generations intriguing, especially how each generation’s attitudes are shaped in reaction to those of the previous.
