Norma's Mansion Symbolism

The story takes place in setting believed to be in Hollywood, with most of the story being in Norma’s mansion. When the audience first sees Norma’s mansion we can clearly see that this particular property has had better times. It was very rundown and shows the audience that Norma is not doing very well at financially because she can’t maintain her mansion and it shows that she is also lonely because it looked like there had been no one living there for quite some while. The mansion is a symbol of how Norma is doing. When we first see the mansion in the bad shape it was in, Norma was very sad because he pet monkey just died Further on in the story once Norma begins a relationship with Joe she is not so lonely anymore and is happy and the house changes and is not rundown anymore and she actually has friends comes over and they actually swim in the pool because finally there is water in it. The mansion also symbolized how Norma was left in the past because it was an outdated mansion. Once Norma’s career was behind her (even though she thought it was still growing strong) and the mansion was full from things from the past and Norma really could never deal with not being a star, even though she stopped being a star a long time ago. I would infer that obviously infer that Joe Gillis didn’t grow up with a lot of money because by the time we see him he is struggling financially. I also think that Norma doesn’t have any family or she is estranged from her family. Maybe her parents are dead and she may not have brothers or sisters but still there is no family at that does lead to Norma being very lonely. Also I can infer that Norma’s career is the most important thing in her life. Norma was married multiple times and had no children. Either she just doesn’t like kids or she didn’t want to stop working and her career was all she ever
