The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli was among the first humanist pieces of Renaissance. It is complete explanation of how to obtain and sustain power in political platform. Yet this work has been an issue over debates since centuries. Nicolo Machiavelli’s work is seen to be significant effort to lay the pillar of the reunification of Italy. This paper talks about the authors’ notion that prince should use various ways to practice his power where for the author ends are more important than the means. His focus lay in the fact that men are naturally evil and work for their own self-interest and that is what a prince should do to exercise power. For instance he narrates the different kind of states that existed that are either republics or principalities. The prince can gain a control of a new principality either through his own army or with the help of others so it was a matter of fortune and strength. The public is seen to follow the new ruler if he proves to be a better ruler thus seen as natural followers. Nicolo argues in his book that destroying an area is usually the most responsible method of protecting power that does not even attempt to direct the moral or ethical objections to his advice. His thinking is realistic in the sense; the only way to leave the entities of the newly conquered states is that to keep the old entities free and active. This might lead the citizens being content and obedient by following the command of the new ruler. This concept of having subjects to be submissive and not having the free will relates back to the authors previous argument about men being natural followers. However it does not concern the author what leads the public to support and obey the ruler. The only crucial issue is whether such support exists. His analysis of the prince is to be self-supporting. According to Machiavelli, a prince who is able to attain power through his own progress will be successful at sustaining power.
