Nick uses the phrase “colossal significance” when referring to the past relevance of the light to Gatsby. The light clearly is meaningful to Gatsby as he would stand the end of his dock and use it as a symbol of Daisy while he longed for her. Even when he could not see her, he would use the light alongside items in newspapers to visualize her. When using this phrase, Nick is describing the lose of symbolism in the light. What once had great meaning to Gatsby, now is insignificant because the distance and longing that it represented are no longer present.
By acknowledging Gatsby’s fixation for his future with Daisy, Nick conjoins Gatsby’s boundless desperation with the novel’s theme that the power of hope cannot determine a dream, or in this case, Gatsby’s dream. Because he is so consumed with his delusion, Gatsby does not realize that his dream is unreachable whereas no amount or power of hope can create his perfected fantasy of the future. In continuation to the green light’s relationship with the theme, not only does the green light illustrate Gatsby’s desperation for the dream but the light furthermore acts as a symbol of Gatsby’s hope for the future. The Great Gatsby is one of the most renowned books known to mankind. A story about a man’s quest to fit into a society built for the rich whilst wooing a childhood crush may seem extremely simple and straightforward, however, the mystery is not behind the plot, but rather, it is in the writing itself. The words F. Scott Fitzgerald used were chosen with such delicacy, one cannot even hope to assume that anything was a mere coincidence. The book is laced with intricate strands of symbolism bound together by a single plot. One of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s more major themes is the use of locations. The importance of location as symbols are further expressed through the green light at the end of the dock as well as the fresh, green breast of the new world.
In novels, the use of symbols makes the story interesting and essential to the readers. Symbols are messages that the author uses to communicate with the reader for a deeper understanding, although sometimes it can only be discovered if analyzed. Fitzgerald connects the different symbols throughout the novel to pinpoint an elaborate meaning towards the story yet it does indicate a pleasant meaning. A symbol such as “color” or “money” can be less complex than it seems. Whereas a symbol as complicated as the “eye” can mean more than it’s suggested for. Throughout The Great Gatsby symbolism represent color, the existence of eyes and money.
F. Scott Fitzgerald tried to accent the point that money does not breed happiness. Money causes people to become envious, greedy, and jealous. It compels people to show a persona of arrogance and creates a haze of fog in the air of the world around them. They begin to become oblivious of the outside world and think of themselves as a higher being. This causes lack of acceptance for their responsibilities. I thing the author was also trying to show us that sometimes one can hold on to a dream for so long, and try so hard to achieve it that it can leave you in misery instead of happiness. The line of attack we use in order to identify individuals around us is an intriguing thing. Our perception is forever shifting, forever building, and affected not only by the person’s actions, but by the actions of those around them. In Scott F. Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby Nick Caraway’s perception of Jay Gatsby is always changing. All the way through the novel, Nick’s perception of Gatsby changes from him perceived as a rich chap, to a man that lives in the past, to a man trying to achieve his aspirations but has failed.
One of the most evident symbols in this piece is the green light. The distant and faint light is a symbol of Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future, but also the past. Gatsby sees the green light from the edge of his dock and presumes that it is
"If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay," said Gatsby. "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock." Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.”(Chapter 5)
Signs, billboards, and advertisements entice people to buy new products. Some of these signs are projected to stand as mirrors and reflect the choices and actions that people make. Throughout the 1920s, people gradually took charge and spent beyond their means, not taking a second glance to perceive what the purpose of these signs were. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald distinguishes the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg on a billboard to convey remorse for the loss of spiritual values within the people in their quest to achieve wealth, signifying the meaninglessness of the world and how their blindness overtakes them.
Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, there are many prominent symbols that pass, seen or unseen, to a reader. The very noticeable symbol is the billboard that contains The Eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, which are compared by one character with “The eyes of God”. A lesser known, but still prominent, symbol is the color green, like the light off of Daisy’s dock across the bay. One of the least thought of symbols though is the place known as “The Valley of Ash”. These symbols are very important to Fitzgerald’s book and reflect of the time of the 1920’s.

He uses eyes and facial features often in combination with colour to convey symbolism. This has a unique and powerful effect because the eyes and facial features are the first things that one uses in determining another’s character. One important thing to note would also be the lack of facial description in determining a character’s importance. By excluding a detailed facial description and thus a description of a character’s eyes, Fitzgerald suggests the lack of a soul. Jay Gatsby spent his time at night looking at green light that glimmered across the bay on East Egg. Gatsby seemed to cherish this light, almost as if it was his enchanted object that he relished everyday. The green light had meant jealously to Gatsby, but now that Daisy was at his side he saw the green light as if it was telling him to go. Gatsby had never felt so close to Daisy, even though the distance between them wasn’t so far at all. But now the green light was just another light at the end of the bay. His count of cherished items had diminished by one.
In Nick Carraway’s narration throughout the novel, he is observant of the characters who long for the American Dream, yet doesn’t judge too quickly. However, his “dream” has little connection to wealth, unlike other characters. It’s more of his morals and mental values that consist of loyalty, equality, and friendship that no other characters possess. His mental value of his friends has “infinite hope” (Page 2). Nick doesn’t jump to conclusion, leaving leeway for his hope to be upheld by the character. For instance, at Gatsby’s party, Nick hears rumors about Gatsby, nevertheless assumes he is, but he still remains not entirely trustworthy of him. The green light signifies Gatsby’s hopes and dreams. Nick thinks back to when Gatsby observes the green light across the bay from West Egg and says, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us” (180). The “orgastic future” represents the American dream in which everyone has the equal opportunity to live in prosperity and happiness through hard work and success. Gatsby’s dream is full of potential, but the memories in his past end up against him and his potential diminishes as his life
