How The Internet is Altering you and I Nicholas Carr’s article, “What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains,” grasps and presents the point that far too often civilization tends to look past the good and the bad that the internet truly does in us. The internet is a tremendous gain because our time and money is saved instead of spent on running errands and scheduling appointments. Our brains do tend to become much like the way in which we spend our time, and unfortunately we spend far too much time on the internet instead of socializing and searching for detail. Carr states that, “Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski” (Carr par 6). In Carr’s story, he interviewed a blogger named Scott Karp, who claimed to have completely stopped reading books. Karp told readers, “I was a lit major in college, and used to be a voracious book reader. What happened? What if I do all my reading on the web not so much because the way I read has changed, but because the way I THINK has changed?” (Carr par 6). This recite caused me to reflect on how my reading has changed over the years, for the worse. I read my bible every night, and I sometimes find myself without motivation to put down my phone and pick up my book, even though I love to read my bible. There are times where instead of putting down my phone, I will open the safari on my phone and read my bible off of a website. Looking back on these times, I am ashamed to say that I fall into the trap of being addicted to my cellular device. We can all agree that being on our cell phones creates a sense of security, but it becomes a problem when we spend hours of our day staring into a screen rather than in a book or at someone’s face. We are a world that desires communication, but is blind to true verbal conversations full of laughter and joy instead of typing and emojis.
