Netflix Company context and strategy Founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings, Netflix is an online subscription service company that streams TV show and movies. Subscribers get to watch unlimited TV shows and moves on TVs, computers, mobile devices. Netflix recorded revenues of $5,504.7 million in FY2014, an increase of 25.8% over FY2013. It has three main business segments - domestic streaming, international streaming and domestic DVD. Domestic streaming is its largest business (62.3% of total revenues in 2014). This is followed by international streaming (23.8%) and domestic DVD (13.9%). Netflix started out as an Internet store offering DVD rentals in early 1998. Whilst Blockbuster charged $5 per movie rental, with fees for late returns. Hastings used a monthly subscription model which allowed unlimited rentals and no late fees. Running the business online also allowed it to avoid the burden of operating physical outlets. Second, as early as 2000, Netflix knew that video cassettes would be replaced by movies streamed over the Internet. Hastings focused the company's strategy on developing software to stream video online. With its online model, Netflix also started building its DVD library to include titles that Blockbuster could not get hold of or display in its stores. Within a number of years, the catalogue in Netflix far surpassed that of Blockbuster. In 2005, with the increase in broadband speeds and better video compression technology, Hastings started cutting back his focus on DVD rentals and entrenching the company deeper into the online video ecosystem. From the years 2006 to 2011, Netflix worked on building two distinct competitive advantages which set up huge barriers to entry for its competitors. First, the company started to tie up with film distributors to secure the rights to movies. Netflix could stream movies on multiple platforms. That same year, Microsoft and Netflix also entered into an exclusive partnership to offer consumers the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to TV via the Xbox
