Nelson Mandela was a warrior throughout his life. He was a leader in the changing of the South African government, a political prisoner for twenty – seven years, and toward the last parts of his life he became the president of South Africa.
In the first parts of his life Nelson Mandela was an activist for changing the government to end the corruption in the South African government. He spent a total of twenty – seven years as a political prisoner. Nelson Mandela achieved what he set out to do many years later after being a political prisoner for a total of twenty-seven years.
Nelson Mandela was born with the birth name Rolihlahla Mandela to a South African clan called Madiba. He was born in Mvezo, Transkeiv. Nelson Mandela’s father’s name was Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa, who was a chief from 1880- 1928. His mother’s name was Nosekeni Fanny, and she was the third of Mandela’s father’s four wives. She gave Mandela’s father thirteen children, four boys and nine girls. Nelson Mandela’s father died when Mandela was only nine years old. Soon after that Mandela was adopted by high ranking official of the Thembu Tribe who started preparing him for the role of a great ruler within the tribe. Nelson Mandela was the first in his family to go to school and that was when he received the name Nelson. Mandela’s father died of tuberculosis.
When Mandela was adopted by the high ranking official, Mandela became royalty and as a result of becoming royalty he attended a Wesleyan School and College. While he was there, Nelson Mandela earned his Junior Certificate in two years instead of three and then he moved to the College of Fort Beaufort. This made history in South Africa because in all of South Africa’s history the majority of everything in the country was run by mainly wealthy white people. In 1998 Nelson Mandela was married to his third wife, Graca Machel. She was the former wife of the president Mozambique. Nelson Mandela married his second wife, Winnie in 1958 and divorced her 38 years later.
Later in 1997 Nelson Mandela resigned from his position as the leader of the African National Congress and later in 1999 Nelson Mandela ended his presidency and in the year of 2004 Nelson Mandela stopped his public life while he still was doing charity work. A statue of him was erected and unveiled in 2007 in Parliament Square, London. On December 5, 2013, Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95.
