According to Elbel, et al, “The percentage of children aged six to eleven years old in the United States who were obese increased from seven percent in 1980 to nearly eighteen percent in 2012” (2). Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past thirty years. Not only is childhood obesity a widespread epidemic plaguing the United States, but in all areas around the world. Childhood obesity is the detrimental effect of the family lifestyle and the cultural environment children are embossed in today and the only to stop it is to attack it at the source.

Families need to visit their child care center to see if it serves healthy foods and drinks, encourage physical activity and limit screen time (Elbel, et al. 1). Families should provide plenty of fruits and vegetables, limit foods high in solid fat and added sugars, and prepare healthier foods at family meals (Sahoo, et al. 1). Instead of buying drinks with added sugars, save money and calories by serving your family tap. Make sure your child gets physical activity each day. Communities need to start supporting healthy school nutrition plans by providing a quality school meal program, and offering students only healthy and appealing food and beverages, when eating outside of the meal program. The communities need to put more effort towards developing school physical activity programs that include quality physical education, classroom physical activity breaks, recess, and opportunities for physical activity before, during, and after school. As well as creating and maintaining safe neighborhoods for physical activity and by making parks and playgrounds easy to get to (Elbel, et al.
