What is self-esteem? Many would define it as how one sees themselves. Although they are correct it’s a bit more than that. Self-esteem beings to form during early childhood (mayoclinic). It is important for parents to give encouragement and praise but not mock or shame the child. These factors can lead to inflated, healthy, or low self-esteem. When parents encourage their child to solve problems by themselves instead of jumping in immediately, they help their child cope with challenges in the future such as peer pressure and emotions (livestrong). Every person in the world has a different esteem level: inflated, high, or low. Effects on self-esteem can have a negative or positive effect on the individual, for myself it was negative. Inflated self-esteem is when one person thinks that they are better than other people. People with this type of self-esteem might have problems establishing an affectionate and healthy relationships (yourmind). Those with high or healthy self-esteem accept and value themselves, they don’t allow negative comments to bring them down. For example, if one were to achieve something that they worked hard for, they would have a high self-esteem. From personal experience, I had low self-esteem when I was a child up until my sophomore year of high school. Low self-esteem is defined as people not valuing themselves, feel insecure, and they don’t trust in their potential (yourmind). Up until my sophomore year of high school, I was severely bullied, extremely sensitive and insecure about my body and who I was as a person. Furthermore, my parents kept pushing me for higher grades than I was already making, and I couldn’t meet their expectations. I feared failure and once I thought I had everything under control, it felt as if the world would crash down and my bullies would ruin what I had
