After finishing my first semester with all A’s, I received an invitation to join The National Society of Collegiate Scholars in the mail. This was the first I heard about the society. Networking, recognition, the chance for leadership development, and scholarship opportunities motivated me to join and I’m glad that I did. Organizations like the National Society of Collegiate Scholars offers many of the resources that all students, especially first generation students like myself, desperately need to succeed in college. NSCS offers connections, support, recognition, opportunities and scholarships which help students to be successful. Getting involved in NSCS allows students to make connections with advisors and fellow students. With the society’s national network of chapters at both community colleges and four-year institutions, I am connected to an impressive number of high-achieving scholars. One of my top reasons to join any organization in college is to build my network. These are the types of people I would want to work with in my career. NSCS goes to great lengths to recognize high-performing students. Membership in the society is not just a line on my transfer application or résumé, but a tool which I can use to build my leadership skills and get noticed. Beyond simply being a member, the volunteering a leadership roles can also help me stand out and shine bright. Community service and leadership are inseparable because service is the hallmark of good leadership, NSCS offers both. Organizations like NSCS offer many opportunities for students.
