Volunteering with the Nashville Food Project has been a great experience. This service-learning project has given me an opportunity to contribute to the Nashville community. This experience impacted me and even taught me new things that I added to my lifestyle. This service-learning project benefitted the community in many different many. To start, the Nashville Food Project is a great organization that genuinely cares about the city. They have created a smart system where that all starts in the garden then goes to the kitchen and ends with meal delivery. Working in the garden and helping save the Hibiscus sabdariffa plant that supplied so many people’s meals was a great experience. It was amazing how just one plant could make so many different meals. All those meals would go a very long way for many people. Even just by composting, this helped create future rich soil so planting would be more organic. Meal prepping was very beneficial to the community as well because it not only gave people food but also gave people the right amount of healthy food. Making healthy meals allowed people in the community to eat healthy and be more nutritious while spreading knowledge how too. …show more content…
It made me more aware of what goes in the city I call home. Being able to help prepare meals for the community was great but being able to prepare the community healthy and nutritious meals was even better. I really value eating healthy and using organic foods especially after this semester learning about it. It definitely influences my every decision when it comes to choosing grocery shopping and choosing my everyday meals. I am hoping by meal preparing the right foods, it would make the people receiving them more conscious. It made me more conscious and had impact on me. Hopefully they will see that the healthier food not only tastes better but also makes you feel
A major issue that is occurring in America is a phenomena known as “food deserts”, most are located in urban areas and it's difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. Whereas in the past, food deserts were thought to be solved with just placing a grocery store in the area, but with times it has become an issue that people are not picking the best nutritional option. This issue is not only making grocery store in food deserts are practically useless and not really eliminating the issue of food deserts because even when they are given a better nutritional option, and people are not taking it. In my perspective, it takes more than a grocery store to eliminate ‘food deserts’. It's more about demonstrating the good of picking the nutritional option and how it can help them and their families. For example, “Those who live in these areas are often subject to poor diets as a result and are at a greater risk of becoming obese or developing chronic diseases.”(Corapi, 2014).

I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. The Food Bank acts as a storage unit and distribution facility for smaller agencies and organizations such as schools, homeless shelters, churches, and day
Michael Pollan makes arguments concerning the eating habits of the average American. Pollan suggests, in spite of our cultural norms, we should simply “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.”
According to resent studies, Americans eat fast food for the convenience, mostly in the Western and Eastern part of the USA and people that cook and eat at home they are more traditional, for example in the Midwest. Fast food has been part of life in the USA for over 60 years. It has become extremely popular by Americans simply for the convenience.
Although the United States is considered one of the richest countries in the world the access to healthy food of good quality has been a significant issue. That problem affects especially elderly and low-income families. I live in Norwalk in Fairfield County and this is also an issue in my area despite the fact that Fairfield County is one of the wealthiest counties in the U.S. (fccfoundation.com). The access to organic foods is even more complicated as the pricing and supply demand dynamics present serious constraints for development in this area of food production. These complex issues are affecting large number of local residents. In this essay I will explore the underlying issues and try to evaluate potential solutions.
Selecting to do my service learning at Harvest Hope Food Bank was a very impactful experience. This was so, because of the fact that I have never volunteered at a food bank until now. The organization was able to connect me with the required skills I will practice throughout my career as a professional social worker, therefore better preparing me for assisting clients who may be dependent on my services.
I chose to do my service learning project at Feed My Starving Children. I chose this service learning project because I had prior knowledge and experience by doing it with my family and church. Feed My Starving Children has been a huge impact to those who have participated in this service experience because their mission is to pack meals that go to very hungry children around the world. Being from a single parent family, it is hard for us to not be concerned about where the money for food is coming from, yet we have food on our tables for everyday meals. Therefore, I can’t imagine what it is like for those who experience hunger.
Walmart is trying to help out food deserts and bring their citizens access to food. Many people in food deserts are forced to buy their produce from stores with little to no nutritious options. With Walmart putting more stores in, urban dwellers will now have access to better produce than they would with no Walmart in their area. McMillan similarly said that Walmart executives are trying to bring their stores to “underserved areas”; she quotes Andrea Thomas, “We believe that our initiative can make healthy, affordable, food more accessible in the nation’s food deserts” (McMillan 140).While it is true that Walmart might put other smaller businesses out of business, it is also true that those people who lived far away from any grocery stores will now be able to get the produced they deserve. Huber also shows how people are using alternative way to buy produce. Fresh Moves is a bus that’s been converted into a “produce market on wheels” (Huber 4). They ride around the city and sell produce to those who would have no access to it otherwise. Another way is the Pennsylvania’s Fresh Food Financing Initiative. According to Huber, “…the program has increased food access for more than 500,000 people and created or saved 5,000 jobs by extending loans and grants for projects that bring fresh food to underserved areas, or help existing retailers expand their healthy food offering” (Huber 5). People are finding ways to thrive in
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Pollan’s main point is introducing science into our food system has had more of a negative impact than a positive one, we should go back to eating more of a traditional diet. I believe food science has given us
America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
... and nutritious experience by giving people actual experience to see, feel and taste what is nutrition about (Hegler, 2010).
This year, I had the opportunity to give back to the community in many ways. I volunteered at Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, and the county Science Museum. These volunteering experiences further opened my eyes to the needs of my community and the many opportunities to serve by volunteering.
The social standing of food became very significant in the early modern Europe. In this period, food was not just a mere substance but was considered an indicator of social position and situation . Food consumed by people was determined by personal preference and most importantly, by one’s prestige, activities and pressure of society in general. Lack of food had social consequences. Doing so encouraged me to eat healthier food, such as more fruits and vegetables, as well as asking for smaller portions.
