The Day I Chipped My Tooth
July 15th, 2009 will be the day that would cause me to change how I eat certain foods. On that day, I chipped my very first tooth. I was about twelve years old. It was funny how the whole incident took place. The story begins something like this.
I woke up and got ready, like a normal summer day. I could hear the cicadas chirping like usual, the sun shining as bright as a flashlight, and could feel the sticky humid air, which is typical in Kansas during the summer. I had previously stayed a night at Jordaan’s house. Jordaan and I have been best friends since kindergarten. Our parents even attended the same high school around the same time. His family is basically my second family. If I am not at my house, I’m usually

This wasn’t our first time being at the Chase for food. We would go every time Chase had the service open. We got in line like normal, grabbed our milk and a tray of food that varied day by day. I remember that day we had a burrito, carrots, pears, and applesauce for lunch. We found an open table and sat down. The table was one of those tables that had chairs already attached to it. All I could think about was where to start first. I was ready to devour the delicious food that I had in front of me. I had not eaten breakfast, so it felt like I could stomach a whole cow. I began scarfing the food down not even tasting it. My mom always said “Boy, are you even tasting the food because I can’t tell.” or “Slow down and chew your food.” It took Jordaan and I about fifth teen - twenty minutes to eat because we would talk to each other and eat simultaneously. Once we were finished with our food, we decided that neither of us wanted to walk all the way back to Jordaan’s house in the Sahara Desert type weather. We ended up waiting on Nikki and the daycare kids to finish which was going to be sometime so we went into the school’s …show more content…
It turned out that I had indeed chipped one of my teeth. One of my teammates found the other part of my tooth approximately five meters from where I had landed. I stood up without no support and immediately went to go find Nikki who was still in the cafeteria waiting for the kids to finish eating. I told her in vivid details what had happened such as it being in the shape of the dragon scale off of Dragon Tales and it being one of my front teeth. She proceeded to call my mom to notify what had occurred. My mom left work to come pick me up. My mom ended up picking me up from Jordaan’s house because Jordaan and I went ahead and made the walk back to his house. Once we made it back, we put the piece of tooth that had chipped off into a bag of ice. My mom arrived about five minutes later because at the time she worked close to Jordaan’s house. She took me to the dentist so they could put my tooth back
My college plans include attending a two-year college and then pursing a degree in dental hygiene. I believe that I will have a great opportunity to give back to my community with my chosen career. As a dental hygienist, there would be many ways to help young and old alike. The time that I would volunteer would enable me to become more involved in the life of our community.
The time was around 10:30 and my eyelids felt as heavy as a brick to keep open. I was just about to shut everything down for the night, when the loud sound of a snapchat notification startled me awake. I looked at the blaring screen of my phone in the dark, to see it was from my friend Jordan. Flirting with each other was our thing, but nothing more. At the end of everything, he's a junior and I'm a freshman, he still wants me to grow up a little bit. I opened up
“Momma!” I whined across the room, “I’m starving.” She always hates when I whine at her, I do it now just to grind her gears. She was lying on the couch so I laid my head on her lap and naming of foods that sounded good to me.
We were traveling thought all the beautiful places and cities in the country. During our vacation, one day we stopped at a restaurant in a small town. As we were eating, my 16-year-old cousin said to me hurry up, finish your meal and we’ll go play outside. I was a little boy just turned six years. I was excited to go play outside with my cousin, so I was the first one to finish with my meal.
Picture yourself with a toothache or someone with poor hygiene and knowing you cannot do anything to change it without a dentist. A dentist is specialized individual that treats the diseases and conditions that affect the oral cavity.
It was the day of April 13, 2000. I woke up at exactly 12 o’clock because my boyfriend was to pick me up at 1 like we planned the night before. The day looked quite nice, but I was in a fowl mood. I got into a car accident the night before and had a huge argument with my parents about the car. I finally dragged myself into the shower and got ready in half an hour. Then I went downstairs, sat on my couch, and repeatedly told myself the day would hopefully turn out better than last night. At around 1:15, my boyfriend came to pick me up. We took the 5 freeway to the 57 since it was the only way I knew how to get there. As we approached the 134 freeway, my girlfriend veered to the right, taking the 210 which was wrong way and got us lost. So, we exited the freeway and got back on the right track. Then finally, before long, we reached Norton Simon.
Many people ask me why I still continue to pursue dentistry even though I have been rejected so many times. I sometimes wonder this same question myself. Maybe it's insanity, maybe it's pride, or maybe it's perseverance. It may, in fact, be a combination of all three, but for me, I believe I am pursuing my passion something I am called to do. It is one thing to pursue something you want to do, but it is another thing to pursue something you are called to do. I realized at a young age that there was more to life than just doing for self, life is about helping those around you. I have always had a passion for helping people and I knew that helping people was the calling placed on my life. But, growing up, I wasn't sure how I was going to pursue or use this passion. When I was in high school I was involved in a weightlifting accident that almost resulted in the amputation of all my fingers on my left hand, fortunately, I had great doctors that were able to save my fingers and make them fully functional. This accident could have drastically changed my life, but it didn't, and I made a vow that whatever I did in life I would make sure it involved the use of my hands.
I walked into the office that Wednesday for my afternoon appointment, and the news was broken to me as I was introduced to my new dentist. He was a relatively new dentist who had just transferred from his first position in another state. When I went into the chair he spoke very little, and did little to ease my anxiety. The final straw came when I was lying back in the chair, and without a word, he began to drill my teeth, prepping them for cavity filling. I clutched the armrests as pain shot through my jaw and through my face
Skipping into Beef O’Bradys, my favorite place to eat, I smiled ear to ear with joy over food. Our food is brought out pretty fast considering how packed they were, not an empty booth in the whole place. We devour it within no time at all listening to our mom discuss how great we played or how shitty, sometimes we even got both. We paid no attention to her though, not because we were teenage girls but because our coach always let us know if we did something wrong and rarely would he praise any of us if we did something right. The lovely server brings Momma the check, surprisingly it was fairly cheap. Tracy, the young lady takes moms money and we go on about our business leaving the restaurant heading to the
Introduction: In Canada, general dental health is not part Canada’s national system of health insurance (Medicare) (1) except for some dental surgical procedures that are performed at hospitals. Since Oral health does not come under the Health Act about ninety-five percent of the oral health care services are offered on a fee-for-service basis. Oral health care is under provincial or territorial jurisdiction like other health care services and publically financed dental care programs provide the remaining five percent of oral health care services (2). Thus, majority of Canadians receive oral health via privately owned dental clinics. Privately owned dental care gives these services providers control over dental service charges, types of available treatment for the patients and number of follow-up appointment for treatments or routine care. Service users pay for the dental expenses from their own pockets or utilize insurance coverage (1).
The office was presented with a shy, eight-year old girl, who was a new pediatric patient scheduled for a routine dental prophylaxis with a dental hygienist. During the oral exam, the dental hygienist noticed that her maxillary central incisors were fractured due to a previous accident on her bike. Being it was a new patient with no recorded history, the incident should be recorded and dated with as many details and findings as possible. Due to her age and the type of accident, it is a very believable story especially since this was the first visit to the office and there were no other incidents recorded.
It gives me a sense of pride to reflect back and write about my adventure, where working hard and staying focused has made me the person I am today. Until now I have seized every opportunity I could to increase my knowledge, think critically about my field, to be a better student, a responsible professional and a humble citizen. I entered dentistry when I was not really sure what I wanted to do in life. All that I was sure about was to be best in what I chose to do. Entering the dental school not only made my family proud of seeing their daughter be the first member in the extended family to be a healthcare professional but also put a big responsibility on my shoulder, which at first seemed daunting. When the sound of congratulations faded,
Unfortunately, it was a dark and cold rainy day which made it difficult with the rain soaking our clothes and all of our equipment. But aside from that, the rain didn’t seem to bother me or anyone else for that matter. Instead we had a slight appreciation for the rain, as if it was mimicking the melancholy feeling that we felt. It always seemed as if our camping trip couldn’t come soon enough, and then when it finally did arrive it was as if it was gone too soon. As the rain started to pour down we loaded everything in the car as fast as we could and we gathered ourselves inside. We watched out the back window as we drove away from the campground, seeing it dissipate in the distance. On our ride home we all felt a little nostalgic and talked about favorite memories of the trip and what we’d do next year. The drive was about 3 hours away from our house and somewhere along the way I fell asleep on Alicia’s shoulder while listening to Taylor Swift. I remember feeling as if I was still drifting in the soft waves of the water, and the thought of that relaxed me into a peaceful sleep. When I finally arrived at home I rushed into the living room where my parents were waiting on the couch to hear all about the awesome experiences I had on my trip. After that I went into my room to call Alicia, and we stayed on the phone with each other while we marked our calendars together to begin the countdown for our camping trip next
As I finished eating, I heard the horn of my uncle’s car outside of my house, they seemed happy and ready to go. We all left at the same time, heading to my grandparent’s ranch. Once we get there, my cousins and I rushed to my grandfather’s fruit trees. He had apple trees, orange trees, lime trees, among others delicious fruits. As the time passed, lunch time came and everybody was called to eat. One of my uncles knows how to cook, and since he was in charge of the meat, he knew what to do to make it better. I remember the taste of that meat, it was delicious and everyone love
