Narcissistic Personality Disorder Approximately 6 percent of the United States population has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The personality disorder is often mistaken for Borderline Personality Disorder, but the anger caused from NPD is much more demeaning. Since NPD is harder to diagnose by psychiatrists, not many people are aware of the disorder. However, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is just as important as other personality disorders, so awareness needs to be emphasized to help reduce the negative effect the disorder has on patients’ lives. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a disorder that affects a person’s sense of self-importance. One can be cured of NPD with the right amount of talk therapy and supportive care from a certified …show more content…
Therapists cannot ensure that the narcissist will be cured if they join therapy, because a patient's ability to control NPD depends on his or her coping skills during relapse. The coping skills needed include tolerating distress, learning to fail, and recognizing how you put others down, which are obtained from attending the therapy sessions. Therapy is such a crucial part of NPD treatment, and whether or not a patient undergoes talk-therapy treatment, the effects of narcissistic Personality Disorder will start to fade away as the patient ages. Overall, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is an overlooked personality disorder, and it should be given just as much importance as Borderline Personality Disorder. Symptoms of NPD affect a person’s self-image and personal life tremendously, and treatment for NPD limits the usage of medication while emphasizing therapy in order to help the patient find an alter personality within. Although 100 percent recovery from NPD is rare, patients diagnosed with NPD should still be aware that various therapy methods can improve their quality of
He will continue to do anything that will make him feel entitled and will continue to use anyone that will reach him to his desired level. It is dangerous to be involved with a narcissistic individual. Their intentions seem naturally good, but once they see the dedication of their victims’ helping hand, they will continue to take advantage until they see no use for them. Once trapped into the bubble of the narcissist, the victim will find ways to run away from them. For Hud, everyone wanted to escape from him and the only way to do it was to depart. Alma searched for another job outside of their little town. Homer died at the arms of Lonnie and Hud while saying, “Hud is waiting for me to go.” Lonnie looks out of the ranch for another job. Hud became toxic and is exhausted his family and housekeeper. He was left alone. It seems impossible to help a narcissist, because telling them the truth of their ignorance is insulting to their character and they will refuse to hear out any of it. That does not mean there is not help for them. Psychotherapy is the best option because it gives narcissists. Through therapy, they must be willing to accept their failure and faults and learn to deal with the problem without hurting others. It is a difficult task for a narcissist, but it is a step to cope with their egotistical minds. It is hard for them to accept they are not perfect and will feel belittled. Once they

The story of Christopher McCandless is that of an over-ambitious youth trying to find himself. Chris’ story, as told in detail in Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, ended tragically in his death within the Alaskan wilderness many months after running away from home with no contact to his family. In Krakauer’s work, he recounts interactions between Chris during his travels and multiple strangers. In this, one may conclude that Christopher McCandless is simply a reckless narcissist, who is selfish and privileged enough to think he can do and get away with whatever he wants. This is, in an emotional analysis, incorrect. Chris was subject to a severe Icarus complex, his ambitions being more than his body and life can handle. He refuses to contact his
With that being said, narcissistic personality disorder is negatively portrayed. For example, the film makes it seem that people who suffer from narcissistic personality disorder are dangerous people who cannot be treated. In reality, people with this disorder can seek real therapy. Deirdre’s psychiatrist only made her worse by encouraging her behavior and giving her random medication. According to the textbook, therapy for people with narcissistic personality disorder focuses on the individual’s grandiosity, their hypersensitivity to evaluation, and their lack of empathy towards others. Relaxation training is also used to help people with this disorder cope with criticism. In my opinion, I was not able to view any positive message from the film because it only demonstrates how people with Narcissistic personality disorder have their lives falling
Firstly, what is exactly narcissism? The word ‘narcissism’ was derived from an ancient Greek myth of Narcissus. Narcissus was depicted as a handsome young man who adored his looks very much. Many young maidens fell in love with him but he criticizes them for being too ugly for him. One day, he fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. However, he accidentally drowned himself as he tried to touch his reflection. Hence, the word ‘narcissism’ is usually depicted as a personality that reflects excessive of self-love on oneself. Individuals who are narcissistic are usually described as somebody who is selfish, snobbish or proud. This is because narcissistic individual processes information obtained differently than others. They believe that they deserve more than others since they think they are more superior in every aspect. Due to their sense of grandiosity, they will do anything in order t...

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental disorder that is considered to be an impairment in personality functioning, the presence of pathological traits, lack of empathy for others and a need for admiration. This type of personality disorder has some related disorders such as antisocial behaviors, interpersonal exploitation and envy. According to Luo, Cai, & Song (2014), “Narcissism refers to a kind of abundant self-love, characterized by a series of characteristic including self-desire for admiration, fantasies of superiority, hypersensitivity to criticism, exploitation of people, and lack of empathy for others” (p. 1). There have been ongoing discussions on how this type of behavior is processed in the brain. It is not clearly known
In Jean Twenge’s novel titled, “Generation Me”, she describes “Generation Me” as a group of self-obsessed, overconfident, assertive, miserable individuals. “Gen-Me” cares about what other people think so much they 'll go to great lengths to “impress” their peers. Self-obsession can be viewed as a sickness of the mind. The average person may be oblivious to the fact that 1 out of 6 people are narcissists. “Narcissism falls along the axis of what psychologists call personality disorders, one of a group that includes antisocial, dependent, histrionic, avoidant and borderline personalities. But by most measures, narcissism is one of the worst, if only because the narcissists themselves are so clueless.” - Jefferey Kluger
Like I mentioned earlier, there are a number of things that can bring on the disorders without the individual even knowing it, things such as bullying, depression, traumatic events, or even just family problems. According to John Grohol(2016) in his article “Personality Disorders” “These disorders aren 't typically diagnosed until an individual is a young adult, often not until their 20s or even 30s”(para 3). Even if they are not diagnosed till they are a young adult doesn 't mean that you didn 't have it years before hand. For both Narcissistic and Avoidant personality disorder there is no difference on how they are diagnosed, there is one possible way and one way only. Diagnosis of both NPD and AVPD is made by a mental and behavioral health professional using a specific set of guidelines that they call DSM-5 guidelines, there are no lab test or any form of test used to diagnose a personality disorder, just that one set of guidelines that a professional must
Robbins & Judge (2009) describe narcissism as an individual “who has a grandiose sense of self-importance, requires excessive admiration, has a sense of entitlement, and is arrogant.” Poet Tony Hoagland brought up a valid observation in the textbook about the American culture
