As part of the Foundations of Pharmacy Practice I had the opportunity to experience my first performance based assessment, which consisted on an evaluation of my communication skills by a simulated patient through a simulated pharmacy encounter setting. The assessment consisted of two main parts, the simulation with the patient where I had to obtain a medication history and counsel the patient on an assigned drug, and the second part was based on our ability to interpret a compoundable drug prescription.
Through out the semester in pharmacy practice laboratory, I have been able to practice counseling and completing a medication history using my laboratory partner as the simulated patient. Even though I have had prior exposure in the laboratory setting, experiencing a real patient encounter in the communication assessment has made me self reflect and realize that the most important aspect in encounters is to build rapport with the patient, which is only achieved by listening and paying attention to what the patient is saying, and replying with empathy, to show them you care for them and their well being. This was an aspect that the patient commented back in the feedback, the fact that

By reflecting on this event I know I will be able to demonstrate my improvements in future laboratory practices and will strive to perfection my skills, so in a future, when I am working as a pharmacist I can provide the best care I possibly can to patients. I understand that as a pharmacist having good communication skills is a priority and this can only be perfected through practice, which I will continue to develop throughout my exposure to different practice settings like, rotations, oral presentations, laboratory experiences and other encounters that I might
About two years ago my closest friend passed away. As I sat at her bedside in the hospital I was shocked to see her in that stricken position. I wondered why was this happening to her?Why was she suffering needlessly? Since I was the age of 16, I have had the desire to help others. It first started with my neighbor Cheryl Conel. Cheryl was an intimately close neighbor of mine who I used to work for. As the years went by Cheryl and I became closer and our friendship strengthened considerably. She became my first strong female role model. Cheryl became very ill one day and learned that she had a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. This bacteria presented very suddenly and quickly caused her to lapse into a coma. I didn't understand at the time just how ill she was-- in my mind I thought she was going to recover and go home soon. I quickly learned that this bacteria is very difficult to eradicate and about a week later on December 9th 2009, Cheryl passed away. I was extremely devastated because I had just lost my mentor and my best friend. I wanted to learn mo...
“A healthcare provider’s bedside manner encompasses their medical knowledge, personality, and ability to understand the patient and communicate their concern for them.” (Britt). Although some individuals don’t see the importance of communication and emotional connection with patients in the medical field, doctors who have problems properly interacting with their patients will have a lower chance of success in healing them. Doctors receive so much education but are never taught proper bedside manners, which is the way that physicians interact with patients. In order to ensure a patient’s comfort, psychological well-being, and physical health, a physician must truly understand their patient.
Pharmacy technicians are truly a specialized discourse community and they satisfy all aspects of Swales’s criteria. Most notably, they share common public goals, have participants who possess a general level of expertise, and who use a highly specialized lexis. The structure and purpose of this group allows one discourse community, pharmacy technicians, to help care for another. Their unique language heavily emphasizes medical acronyms and allows for effective completion of common purpose, intercommunication, feedback, and the successful transferring of vital information.
Wal-Mart first opened in Rogers, Arkansas on July 2, 1962. Wal-Mart was built on the principle of “The Lowest Prices Anytime, Anywhere”. What started out as a simple discount store became the largest retailer in the world with 11,000 stores worldwide with a net sales of $482.2 billion. Wal-Mart works to bring value to its customers and to create opportunities for everyone. My preceptor was Dr. Lorrie Williams and she was one of three pharmacists in charge of the Wal-Mart pharmacy that I interned at for my Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience. She had many roles within the pharmacy. Her primary roles were to check the prescriptions before being filled to ensure that it is the correct drug being dispensed and to ensure there is no tampering
I learned a lot from this experience. As I mentioned earlier first time when I saw pharmacist doing medication reconciliation I felt it is difficult task to do and hence I started getting more information about medication reconciliation from my friends and pharmacist whenever I got a chance. I prepared myself before I expose myself in this area, which helped me to gain more confidence when I was performing medication reconciliation with standardized patient. I learnt how important is Pharmacist role in finding and solving medication related discrepancies. From this activity, I learnt that it is very important to communicate effectively with patients and other health care providers. If I am unable to communicate properly I will not be able to
Communication plays a major role in preventing and resolving behavior problems and enhancing your patient’s quality of life by allowing them to feel, even when they no longer know or recognize those around them that they are in the midst of people who care about them and are concerned about their physical and emotional well being.
Relational Practice is being mindful of your own actions, environment, and situations. It goes beyond treating the disease and focuses on the patient as an individual with his or her own unique needs. In order to establish and maintain a concrete nurse-client relationship, nurses must utilize a wide range of effective communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to communicate effectively is an important skill that not only proves to be imperative as a nurse but also in everyday interactions. That said, for the purpose of this paper, I will evaluate an interaction I had with a close family friend, where he disclosed his history of alcohol abuse and how it affects him every day. I will discuss the style and skills that I fulfilled during
Rapport and empathy are two essential skills for communication in health services. In this integrative essay, it is displayed how rapport and empathy play an important role for communication in health services, such as counselling and psychotherapy. Empathy helps building rapport with the client. Both skills are needed in counselling, because once the client has found trust in the counsellor there is a bigger chance of them opening up about their feelings. If a client has a good rapport with the counsellor, they are less likely to discontinue the sessions. A five minute non-scripted video is included with this essay and will be referred back to, while describing and discussing rapport building and empathic listening. The video’s content is a first interview with a client, where the client tells the counsellor about a troubling issue. At the end a self-reflection is included, which will reflect upon the video, the challenges faced and future improvements for personal improvement upon communication skills.
Despite the frequency of verbal interactions, miscommunication of patient information occurs that can lead to patient safety issues. . . . ‘Effective communication occurs when the expertise, skills, and unique perspectives of both nurses and physicians are integrated, resulting in an improvement in the quality of patient care’ (Lindeke & Sieckert, 200...
During my time in the Pharmacy, I found it to be rewarding, informative and a beneficial experience as it gave me an insight of how a local pharmacy operates. It also showed me how varied a pharmacist's roles are, not do only pharmacists dispense medicinal drugs but offer information about healthy lifestyles like stop-smoking programmes and sexual health. The biggest responsibility of a Pharmacist is to make sure the dosages of the medicine is accurate and correct instructions given to the patient about a prescription. Furthermore, I learnt that teamwork is vital to maximise the completion of tasks. I also learnt that verbal communication is essential to improve understanding between patients and pharmacists. To educate myself about what pharmacist do in their everyday practice I read pharmacy times. My duties were to check expiry dates of medicines, insert invoices into the computer and help the pharmacists with dispensing drugs. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and looking forward to embarking on a career as a pharmacist. I am currently working as a volunteer with British Heart Foundation as a sales assistant. This has enhanced my ability to interact with different people with different personalities. These traits are crucial for a Pharmacist as I will be meeting a variety of customers and offering them an advice on their prescription. This accomplishment makes me feel that I made a
I am now more comfortable playing roles such as the initiator and recorder. Furthermore, I now know the scope of practice of professionals like occupational therapist, physical therapists and social workers. Attending the Help Save Stan simulation also had a positive impact on my learning. In the ‘Simena’ simulation, I saw a resident who was experiencing difficulty in communicating with a patient, due to his belief that the patient was drunk and dependent on pain medication. From this scenario, I was able to identify the need for professionals to listen to patients without making assumptions because patients are the expert of their own symptoms and have all the key data (Warren, 2015). Again, in the ‘Say what’ simulation, I was able to identify how communication affects patient safety. In this scenario, I received a change of shift report with some vital details missing. Since safe clinical handover is a requirement for safe patient care, the use of structured communication tools, such as SBAR (situation, background, assessment and recommendation) will provide a framework for providing key information (Guadine & Lamb,
I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. But more importantly, it facilitates a practical environment in dealing more closely with patients. Hence, it helps to provide the ultimate health care services to patients. Also, it permits me to carry on gaining different knowledge, skills, and values in addition to those I have already developed during my undergraduate studies. My interest in being a clinical pharmacist was first aroused during my SPEP rotation in the hospital setting where I was really impressed with the role of clinical pharmacists who provide a consistent process of patient care with healthcare teams to maintain the appropriateness, effectiveness and safety of the medication use. Unlike a pharmacist, a clinical pharmacist has a more diversified responsibilities and closeness to direct patient care. Moreover, provides
Communication plays a vital role in all areas of healthcare, yet its importance is often overlooked. Whether it is a doctor talking to patients about treatment options, or strangers comforting one another in a waiting room, communication is happening everywhere and almost always, we underestimate how important it is and how it truly affects our medical experience. In the movie The Doctor, this is exactly what happens, causing a whirlwind effect of emotions and learning.
I was also responsible for monitoring medication orders and reviewing patient profiles to ensure that the proper drugs and dosages were prescribed and that the pharmacy technician had prepared them properly. In many instances there were mistakes made in the preparation phase and sometimes even before, with incorrect dosages or drugs being prescribed and prepared, which could result in serious adverse effects for the patient. A clinical pharmacist’s role, however, is to make sure that these mistakes never reach the
Pharmacists often work together in a team with other healthcare professional like physicians and nurses. In the process, pharmacists will give advice to them on the selection of medication, by providing the evidences based on the dosage form, the side effects and possible interaction with food of the medication. On the other hand, pharmacists also take part in research and clinical studies. Recently, pharmacists are recruited to conduct pharmacy-based research in pharmacies. (Swanson, 2005)
