May 19th, 2013. The day that indirectly started my passion for healthcare. Sitting at my brother’s high school graduation I noticed a select few graduates had red cords around their necks. Not knowing what the red cord meant, I did a little research. I later discovered these cords were given only to students who actively donated blood throughout their high school career. Selfishly, I thought that red cord would look great against the white graduation gown I would be wearing in 2 short years and decided to become a blood donor. I never understood the impact that blood donation had on the healthcare environment until my first appointment. Feeling the warm blood travel down my arm for the first time I realized what a huge impact I was making with this one simple act and a spark was ignited within me. Every place I have visited has exposed me to different cultures and customs that have broadened my outlook on life. I have so much respect for the different ways of life I have encountered and I think this allows me to bring a unique perspective into my own life and my nursing career. I have learned that people may come from all different walks of life but they all have one thing in common – the need to feel loved. One of the best and most profound lessons I have learned in nursing school is that we can provide a patient all the medical care in the world but the strongest medicine is love.
