You may not think about it every day; but not everyone thinks like you do. Everyone has their own ideas, thoughts, and reasoning. Temple Grandin expands on this in her article, “My Mind is a Web Browser.” She categorizes three main types of thinking, visual, language, and audio. Temple Grandin is autistic, and also explains what thinking with autism is like. From her article, I’ve analyzed just why she claims “My Mind is a Web Browser.” Temple Grandin uses many metaphors to explain her way of thinking. She uses terms like “web browser,” “tape recorder,” and “computer.” She says, “I hypothesize that the frontal cortex of my brain is the operator and the rest of my brain is the computer” (Grandin 404). It freezes to make its decision and decides what it is going to do. “It does not act like a robot,” Grandin explains. Its thoughts are based on logic of the situation as it decides what to do. Grandin compares autistic thinking to such. Their thinking being able to separate emotions from decision making and only acting upon logic of the situation. Grandin acknowledges that people with autism do think differently than those without it, however, throughout the majority of her article she categorizes people as different types of thinkers. Within the article she categorizes people as either language, visual, or audio thinkers. Why would Temple Grandin classify people this way rather than just keeping it autistic and on autistic? Grandin’s usage of “thinkers” is due to the fact everyone thinks differently, regardless of being autistic or not. She categorizes into these types of thinkers to explain what the world looks and sounds like to others. Temple Grandin mentions “…my thinking process is like that of an epidemiologist…” By saying this it’s easy to conclude that she follows pattern and categorizes each one to help her recognize and understand new concepts.
