During the Enlightenment period, there were many, new, great, and exciting ideas and items that became popular. While art changed from Baroque to Rococo, music changed to an elegant type called classical. Many composers became popular because ballets and operas, which used to be only for the wealthy, got opened up to the middle classes and that let them experience great music. Some of the greatest composers, Mozart, Bach, Haydn, and Handel were all from the Enlightenment period and were famous for their composing. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria on January 27, 1756. He grew up as a musical prodigy. When he was around six, he could learn a piece of music within the hour. He was born in Eisenach, Germany on March 21, 1685, which was about fifty or sixty years before Mozart. He grew up with musical parents as well as being the youngest of eight children. When he was young, he could play the violin, the organ, and was a fantastic singer. His older brother, Johann Christoph took care of him and contributed to his musical teaching when their parents both died. Bach was around ten when all of that happened. When Bach was fifteen, he gained a spot in St. Michaels’ school choir. Bach never traveled very much. He never left Germany really. Bach was also a devout Lutheran. He had most of his career playing and composing in churches. In 1703, he became the organist at St. Bonfire Church. During that time, he also married his cousin Maria Barbara. After their marriage, Bach became the organist and concertmaster at the Court of Weimar. After ten years there, he moved to a different post. He was soon a kapellmest at the court of Prince Leopold. George Frederick Handel was born on February 23, 1685. Handel showed his aptitude for music ever since he was a child. His father wanted him, so badly to become a lawyer. To please his father, Handel went to law school but eventually dropped out to join an opera orchestra in Hamburg, Germany. He played in the orchestra as a violinist. In 1707, he began studying opera in Italy. Five years later he went back to Germany but then quickly went to England where he spent the rest of his life. He began to compose for King George II. He then had a stroke and then lost his vision. Bach also had the same thing happen to him. Handel died on April 14, 1759 and remained celibate. Franz Joseph Haydn was born on March 31, 1732. Out of all of these composers, he was the last born. Just like all of the other composers, Haydn grew up in a very musical family. When he was six years old, he was sent to live with his uncle because he was very musical. His uncle’s house had really horrid living conditions so, when Haydn was too old to sing in the boys’ choir, he moved out of his uncle’s home and moved in with his friend.
