Conflicts Of The Most Dangerous Game Usually in stories there are conflicts to make the story attract attention. A conflict is absolutely necessary to a story. If a story does not have a conflict, it will be boring. The conflict gives the story action and problems between one or more characters. One of the conflicts is Man vs. Man. The second basic conflict shown in stories is the Man vs. Nature conflict. Thirdly, the Man vs. Himself conflict. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” Richard Connell presents the three basic types of conflict that make the story exciting. The conflict Man vs. Man exists in the short story written by Connell. The hardcore action between characters throughout the short story makes the trait available for perception. The narrator says: “The first thing Rainsford’s eyes discerned was the largest man Rainsford had ever seen- a gigantic creature, solidly made and black bearded to the waist. In his hand the man held a long-barreled revolver, and he was pointing it straight at Rainsford’s heart” (3). The narrator, shows Ivan about to kill Rainsford, making Man vs. Man a real conflict in the story. It is essential that a story features at least one conflict. When there is a protagonist and antagonist in a story, Man vs. Man conflict is existent. A character fighting nature has the name of Man vs. Nature. Lastly, a character can battle him or her self. It can be a character convincing him or herself that everything is okay or a fight through exhaustion. The name of this conflict is Man vs. Himself. Any story needs a conflict to make it enthralling.
