The American Dream The American dream can be defined as a national ethos in America, which is the belief that includes the chance for one’s success and prosperity, and an upward move in the social mobility ladder that is achieved through great determination and hard work. In this book, the author shows how life in America was in the 1920s, which represents the era of decayed moral and social values (Bumm 22). The decay of social and moral values in this era is shown when the author shows the overarching greed and cynicism in the Americans, with most of them struggling to pursue empty pleasure. The author shows the reckless jubilance in the Americans, which led to wild jazz music and decadent parties, which are well epitomized in the novel. The narrator of this movie is employed and lives a decent life but the problem is lack of passion for his work. This lack of passion for his job drives the narrator to believe that there is no sense of reward and seeks other ways of deriving satisfaction. Trying to create a perfect environment at his apartment does not also work out. These problems develop into insomnia and a sense of being alienated from the rest of the world (French, 2007). Jim Uhls gives a vivid description on how the narrator suffers to the extent that he is taken to support groups having terminally diseased patients for company (French, 2007).
