The Cask of Amontillado was created by Edgar Allan Poe and is a story involving Montresor, a man who has been emotionally hurt by a person named Fortunato in which he seeks revenge against him. Montresor exploits the drunk state of Fortunato to trick him into going into an underground graveyard (catacomb) all while Montresor action’s show his true personality. One of the most prominent things that I noticed was Montresor’s use of irony in his dialogue. For example, “‘Enough,’ he said; ‘the cough’s a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.’ ‘True --true.’ I replied”. In that statement he vocally agrees with Fortunato that he will not die while knowing all too well his future fate.
