The quote stated in the bible “Money is the root of all evil,” has been argued for many years. This statement is claiming that, the need of money can create a monster out of anyone. As in this story where the merchant is forced to make a decision due to the lack of money he owns. He chooses to sell his only son to a black dwarf to become rich. This trade will become the seed in turning his own child into a monster. Heinel does start off with a great heart, but due to a series of events it’s almost as if he’s forced to be a monster. Constantly, being the victim of each situation undoubtedly changes who Heinel starts off as and who he ends as in this story. He truly becomes the Monster of Golden Mountain. The Murderers Are Among Us, directed by Wolfe Gang Staudte, is the first postwar film. The film takes place in Berlin right after the war. Susan Wallner, a young women who has returned from a concentration camp, goes to her old apartment to find Hans Mertens living there. Hans took up there after returning home from war and finding out his house was destroyed. Hans would not leave, even after Susan returned home. Later on in the film we find out Hans was a former surgeon but can no longer deal with human suffering because of his traumatic experience in war. The media generally portrays the prototypical serial killer through the lens of two extremes. They can either have an incapacitating mental illness or be brilliant, but severely troubled, geniuses. Yet, neither of these two stereotypes are accurate, as serial killers generally display signs of psychopathy, which is not considered a mental illness by the American Psychiatric Association. Despite the erroneousness of Hollywood’s movies and television shows, many psychologists and lawmakers are still considering the degree to which psychopaths can be considered responsible for their actions. In “Psychopathy and Culpability: How Responsible Is the Psychopath for Criminal Wrongdoing?” researchers Adam R. Fox, Trevor H. Kvaran, and Reid Griffith Fontaine attempt to draw conclusions from evidence on whether or not psychopaths meet the criteria for full criminal responsibility. Other researchers, such as Scott E. Watching this tragic documentary left me with a lot of questions. I can relate this documentary to more than one theory that I have learned in class, but I think the best theory that explains what I saw is the Psychological School of Criminology. This documentary is a vivid picture of how a person’s life can devastate them psychologically and turn them into something deplorable. According to the Psychological School of Criminology crime results from inappropriate conditioned behavior or abnormal, inappropriate or dysfunctional mental processes stemming from the personality. Defective or abnormal mental processes have a variety for causes including a diseased mind, inappropriate learning, or inadequate conditioning, usually in early childhood. This theory best fits with the documentary of Aileen: The life and death of a Serial Killer. All the mental or psychological damage was done to her during her childhood. All that made an impact on her to the point where she has no self-respect.

He was never charged with the deaths of any of his victims in Chicago due to the inability to positively identify any victims (H.H. Holmes, 2004). Holmes gave numerous stories to police about what happened in “The Murder Castle”, and admitted to at least 27 murders, but again, the exact number is not known. Holmes acted as his own lawyer in the case of murder and insurance fraud against him, but was convicted and hanged on May 7, 1896 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (H.H. Holmes Biography, 2015).

Though one may think that these killers are different and incomparable they all share a disturbed and damaging childhood that led them to their notorious fame that is still talked about today. Serial killing is defined as someone who murders 3 or more people in which the murders take place over at least one month and the killer has to take a “cooling off period” (physicality np). In case you were wondering these 3 serial killers exceeded the qualifications of being defined as a serial killer. While all these serial killers are unique in their own why they all have childhoods that have affected the way they kill in some way, shape, or form.

Having recently completed several Books by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment,” the “Idiot” and the Possessed. The complicated nature of his writings, much of which admittedly present some difficulty in one’s understanding of them. Discussing the material certainly helps expand one’s thinking of these subjects not before given much thought. Politics of the time, religion and social awareness are some of the issues so detailed by the author make me want to read more. The following paragraphs briefly describe the Novels read. Between the years 1866 and 1880, Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky completed several well-read novels, including Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Possessed plus a long list of other outstanding works.
Jack the Ripper, the Zodiac Killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Son of Sam, the BTK Killer. The names and assumed names of these cold-blooded serial killers are forever branded into the cognizance of people everywhere. This is mainly due to the mass media coverage, including newspapers, movies, television specials and books. This media coverage brought to light that these killers were, on the surface, normal, successful, attractive, productive members of society – that is, until the time that their heinous crimes came to be discovered.
Crime is one of the most popular Genres of Literature in modern times for both written and visual entertainment. The Genre had to begin somewhere; however the beginning point of the Modern Crime genre was at a much different point in history then the actual beginning of the genre. Evidence has proved to us that crime was written about many years ago by some Chinese writers, however, the style and plot of the writing was of much difference to the Crime genre we are currently exposed to. It wasn’t until the 19th century that Modern Crime writing sparked. It was then, that famous writers like Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle introduced fictional characters into the genre and began writing with the guidelines of a narrative model.
