Miriam and Laila

Laila and Miriam are both interesting characters, but for different reasons. Both are wedded to Rasheed, an abusive older man. He quickly becomes both their salvation and destruction, in a war torn country. The catalyst of Miriam’s’ perpetual guilt throughout the novel (or part of it) was when she was escorted back to her home by Jalil’s chauffer, and found her mother hanging from the willow tree. Before Miriam left for her father’s home, Nana begged Miriam to stay, and the words haunted her. “I’ll die if you go. The jinn will come, and I’ll have one of my fits… Don’t leave me Mariam jo. Please stay. I’ll die if you go.” P.27. so when Miriam returned to find her mother dead, she felt responsible. Had this been Laila, the incident wouldn’t have scarred her into her adult life. Laila always cared for her mother, even when her mom screamed at her, or was deeply depressed. So even with her deeply difficult circumstance, Laila never burdened herself emotionally, never felt guilt for things she couldn’t control.
