Michael Swango was one of the most prolific serial killers in American history, with roughly Sixty murders ranging from poisoning, overdosing patients, and handing out dangerous drugs as prescriptions. Most victims were patients of Swango, and few victims were actually co-workers of his. Like other serial killers, Michael fit the ‘Typical’ description, that is, growing up with family issues, being very intelligent, and being a middle aged white male. Now let's rewind back to the beginning so we can have a better understanding on the events that led towards Swango killings. Swango was born October 21, 1954 in Tacoma Washington. This is where things get a bit strange and we start to see the early development of a Serial Killer. In his fourth year, Michael wanted to write his chemistry thesis on the death of a famous writer, who was poisoned. Michael became obsessed with poisons. After he graduated he looked to further his education even farther and try for Med school. Despite the odds, Swango was able to get accepted into Southern Illinois University. Michael displayed a very serious work ethic while at college, but some questioned his methods. Even though he just started Med School, Michael took a job as an ambulance driver. Here he could witness hand on hand, people dying in front of him, which was his second obsession. His third year at SIU, five patients that he has had recent contact with miraculously died. His co-workers would often make fun of him and call him names related to the amount of people that have died in his care. Swango applied at another ambulance company and was surprisingly hired. He was given the title Emergency Medical Technician. While working for the new Ambulance company, Michael started to display some very weird behavior. He would often talk about his various scrap books that he had created over the past years, that had numerous bloody and gory accidents. This raised questions and concern from his fellow employees. Michael’s first known act of poisoning was when he brought in a box of donuts for his co-workers and everyone who ingested one became very sick. Having a good suspicion, Police searched his house and found hundreds and different poisons and poison paraphernalia. Just a year after receiving his medical license, Michael Swango was arrested of Battery for poisoning co-workers. He was sentenced to only five years in prison and lost his medical
