Mental models and mindsets are the appearances of people’s thoughts for the explanations of working things in the real world. Mental models and mindsets are generated in the human heads as internal images for the neighboring processes. These mental models and mindsets are influenced by several forces, such as social change, physiology, thinking capacity, and mental ability. Throughout this paper, I will discuss the mental models/mindsets and their impact on the two coworkers. I will also identify the four steps to change mental models/mindsets and the five forces that influence those mental models/mindsets of the coworkers. Additionally, I will give examples of what mental models/mindsets are affecting the coworkers’ decision-making processes and analyze the most commonly used mental models/mindsets that guide the decision-making in the workplace.
Mental Models and Mindsets of AAA Transportation
Wind, Crook, and Gunther (2005) stated, “Mental models and mindsets affect every aspect of our personal and professional lives and our broader society” (p. III). Over the years, AAA Transportation has pride itself on transporting wholesale produce in refrigerated trailers throughout the Midwest. Recently, the new owners want to make changes to the service, which add delivery of nonperishable products to their delivery routes to expand service to their existing customers. Adding nonperishable items to the delivery would benefit the customers at a lower rate of what they are paying now. With the new idea, the company could expand its delivery area outside of the Midwest to other States. Thus, bringing in more profit, which could be one of AAA Transportation’s best ideas yet.

... the old saying, “change is good.” Another one of the mental models and mindsets that affects my decision-making is verbal descriptions. When it comes to organization building and progression, I am always open to discussion and select the best idea to improve specific goal.
Conclusion
In the business world, it can be difficult to get out of mental models and mindsets because sometimes they can help us move forward and sometimes they can hold us back. It is imperative to look at the decision from every angle to change our mental models and mindsets. However, to use the models and mindsets properly, we need to understand and appreciate their benefits. I hope that Vernon and Bud will seriously consider all angles of this new idea and come onboard with the rest of the team. By doing so, will be a win win situation for both AAA Transportation and the two coworkers.
Increasing revenue is the main focus of business in a capitalistic venture. The most profitable items for AWG are their fresh produce line which carries an approximate 5% profit margin, but requires an inventory turn time of three days to guarantee freshness and overall customer satisfaction. The application of a SWOT analysis demonstrates that AWG’s attributes far outweigh its limitations. At the end of 2012, AWG amassed sales reaching approximately $8 Billion (AWG, 2014). Walmart leads the retail grocery market, but as AWG erodes that ranking it will emerge as a logistics leviathan in the future.
It has been noted from the text that our perception influences the thinking and decisions we make. It shows that choices differ because of the different understanding that individual have. In addition, our intuition is essential and at many times it provides us with guidance on how to make decisions. However, we can see that this intuition can be misleading at times and therefore the best thing is to evaluate the available evidence before making decisions. In my view decision making tends to have disciplinary across individuals. The best thing can be is to take time and individuals should not rush when it comes to making critical decisions. It is because of the outcomes that might be expected in the
Theoretical perspectives in the study of human behavior can easily be applied to cases in social work practice. The mental health field in particular lends itself to the application of different human behavior theories. Specifically, depression can be viewed through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory, or Social Cognitive Learning. There is one case of a woman with depression, whose name will be changed, that social cognitive theory can be applied to. Cheryl is a 58 year old woman who has been diagnosed with Major depressive disorder. She has had this diagnosis since she was 17 years old. Many of her symptoms and experiences can be viewed or explained in terms of social cognitive theory.
Cognitive dissonance is a communication theory mostly used in the field of social psychology in providing a theoretical framework in dealing with various issues relating to psychology. The title provides us with the concept that cognitive is thinking while dissonance is the inconsistency or conflict brought about. Cognitive dissonance manifests when one holds two or more incompatible beliefs simultaneously. This theory has been used and applied in several disciplines including communication, due to its simplicity and straightforwardness. The theory is commonly applied in these dynamic fields since it replaces previous conditioning or reinforcement theories by viewing individuals as more purposeful decision makers striving to acquire a balance in their beliefs. Cognitions are chunks or bits of knowledge which can pertain to any variety of values, emotions or values. These cognations can be related to one another or they can also be completely independent from each other (Cooper, 06). For instance, one may like to eat junk food, but may also be trying to lose weight. The two cognitions are related to each other in tha...
Happy Hat, a U.S. national chain of frozen yogurt stores with about 500 stores in 40 states is asking for assistance with its business processes. The average number of visitors per store has held constant over the past several years, but revenues per store are down by an average of 10%, and many stores are no longer profitable. The client suspects that a large amount of inventory is being thrown away unused at the end of each day. At the same time, customer polling suggests that the yogurt flavor customers want is often not available, even when the flavor is posted on the menu. People also complain about stores being closed when they visit. Now, the chain is facing increased competition from frozen yogurt sold in 24-hour grocery stores. Happy
Describe what evolutionary psychologists mean when they employ the term ‘theory of mind’. Use examples and research studies from Book 1, Chapter 2 to show why this theory is important in evolutionary psychology.
Founded in 1907 as a messenger company, United Parcel Service has grown into a world renowned provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. This multi-billion corporation enables and manages the flow of goods, information, and funds to over 200 countries and territories around the globe (UPS.com, 2013). Air, freight, oceanic is just a few of the modes that UPS uses to move the flow of goods around the globe. The company structure of UPS entails operations in three segments: U.S. Domestic Package operations, International Package operations, and Supply Chain & Freight operations. It’s just about an everyday occurrence to see an brown UPS truck on the road as we go about our everyday lives, the U.S. Domestic Package operations are comprised of delivery of documents, packages, and letters around the United States. The International Package operation delivers specifically outside the United States. Providing deliveries to the world’s major business hubs up to three times a day, UPS can deliver packages to at the best time possible for their customers. UPS has teamed up with the U.S. Commercial Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, to help customers get started exporting or increase their sales to new global markets (UPS.com, 2013). Communication within a supply chain that flows freely between partners reduces in-efficiencies such as excess inventory (bullwhip effect), and lost profits. The Supply Chain & Freight operation within UPS entails forwarding and contract logistics operations and UPS Freight. As a freight forwarder they organize shipments from various sources to their final p...
Michael Jordan, considered the greatest basketball player in history, once said, “If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” This quote portrays the mindset Jordan had while he was struggling to achieve his dreams. The effectiveness of his mindset proved that we can turn it into a powerful weapon that will help us excel in life. Michael Jordan had a positive mindset. He didn’t give up after failing the first time. He kept trying to get where he wanted. His mindset defined him, much like how our mindsets define us. Whether we are optimistic or pessimistic, it plays a huge role in our journeys. Someone who is pessimistic may never achieve his dreams because he constantly doubts himself. He believes that he will constantly fail. Those who have gained success embrace failure because that is what makes them stronger and smarter the next time they work toward their goal. Our mindset is what defines our success because it is what will make us work hard and put an effort into achieving our dreams, no matter how many failures come first.
For years philosophers have enquired into the nature of the mind, and specifically the mysteries of intelligence and consciousness. (O’Brien 2017) One of these mysteries is how a material object, the brain, can produce thoughts and rational reasoning. The Computational Theory of Mind (CTM) was devised in response to this problem, and suggests that the brain is quite literally a computer, and that thinking is essentially computation. (BOOK) This idea was first theorised by philosopher Hilary Putnam, but was later developed by Jerry Fodor, and continues to be further investigated today as cognitive science, modern computers, and artificial intelligence continue to advance. At the age of seventeen, Fred Deluca decided to open a submarine sandwich shop as a way to help pay for his education of becoming a medical doctor. Dr. Peter Buck offered Fred a $1,000 loan and became his partner and 1965 the first Subway store was opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They learned through experience how to run a business, with the integrity of serving a high quality product, and providing excellent customer service. Today, Subway is the world's largest sandwich chain with more than 41,000 locations around the globe. The goal is to serve the highest quality foods, and make sure everything produced meets the safety standards from the time it is grown, to when it is put into a sandwich. To insure this, sustainable agricultural practices such as cover cropping, and crop rotation this restores nutrients and minimizes pesticide and fertilizer use. With thousands of restaurants throughout the world, subways supply chain needs to be sustainable and efficient in order to cut costs. Many vendors and suppliers worked with Subway to add or move locations closer to our distributors, and we have implemented many re-distribution centers which help reduce emissions, and provide lower shipping costs. Subway has a Distribution Operational Efficiency program that’s purpose it so find ways to ensure all traveling routes and techniques are optimized, and all the trucks are shipped with full loads to reduce mileage, and be as efficient as possible. Recently, Subway has introduced a process in the United States that consolidates all orders of equipment into a single shipment for new restaurants, and restaurants being remodeled. This helps eliminate excess packaging, and unnecessary non-value added activity at the building site. Subway...
Aim of this paper is to examine and present the application of social cognition models in the prediction and alternation of health behavior. Social cognition models are used in health practices in order to prevent illness or even improve the health state of the individuals in interest, and protect their possibly current healthy state. This essay is an evaluation of the social cognition models when used to health behaviors. Unfortunately it is impossible to discuss extensively all the models and for this reason we will analyze three of the most representative cognitive models to present an integrated idea of their application.
In the real business world, apart from textbooks and classrooms, management is charged with the task of making hundreds of decisions daily and must be ready to accept the consequences when the wrong...
This case study will address many issues facing Wawa in an attempt to make the store better able to meet and surpass consumer expectations. The first problem is the biggest problem that faces any retail business, shrinkage. Wawa food department receives food and then sells it. Because of universal food handling regulations as well as a commitment to consumer safety, Wawa will not sell any products that are out of code meaning past its expiration date and time. Any food that is out of code and thrown away is at a cost. Different products have vastly different profit ratios.
Personality can be defined as an individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting. Many personality theorists have put forward claims as to where personality is derived from and how it develops throughout an individual’s life. The two main personality theories this essay will be focusing on is the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) (Bandura, 1986) and the Trait Theory – Five Factor Theory (FFT) (McCrae and Costa, 1995). The SCT allocates a central role to cognitive, observational learning and self-regulatory processes (Bandura, 1986). An individual’s personality develops through experiences with their sociocultural environment. Whereas the Trait Theory proposes that all individuals are predisposed with five traits (Extraversion, Openness, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Neuroticism) which determines our personality. This theory also puts forward that personality is stable and cannot change as it’s biologically determined.
Sigmund Freud was born May 6, 1856, in a small town -- Freiberg -- in Moravia. His father was a wool merchant with a keen mind and a good sense of humor. His mother was a lively woman, her husband's second wife and 20 years younger. She was 21 years old when she gave birth to her first son, her darling, Sigmund. Sigmund had two older half-brothers and six younger siblings. When he was four or five -- he wasn't sure -- the family moved to Vienna, where he lived most of his life.
